Climate17 is delighted to be partnering with The Greater South East Net Zero Hub (GSENZH); a high-impact government-backed project group designed to develop and support the delivery of projects to accelerate the UK’s transition to Net Zero. Set up by the UK government in 2018 and funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), there are five Local Net Zero Hubs across England. All Hubs work together to help the UK reach Net Zero.
To date, the Net Zero Hubs have supported 200+ major net zero projects valued at over £4Bn including large-scale solar, Heat Networks, Smart Grids, domestic retrofit, hydrogen development, public estate-wide energy opportunity assessments, fleet and depot decarbonisation, network constraint, building decarbonisation & research & development.
The opportunity
We are seeking a Chairperson to sit on the Board and to be the figurehead of the GSE Net Zero Hub. The individual will provide leadership and representation, chair meetings, set the strategic direction and oversee the delivery of the DESNZ Grant Funding Programme to accelerate net-zero. You will work provide strategic decision making in an advisory capacity for the following areas:
- Local Net Zero – a public sector net zero support programme, providing strategic and technical support, grant funds, strategic project delivery, supply chain and knowledge transfer to accelerate and upscale investible local net zero projects.
- Public Sector Estates Decarbonisation – supporting public sector project pipeline development.
- Grant Programmes: Local Energy Advice Demonstrator, Community Energy Fund
- Capital programmes: Domestic retrofit schemes for fuel poor households e.g HUG2 (Home Upgrade Grant 2) project delivery.
- Strategic projects – including several projects, initiatives, and pilots being delivered on behalf of DESNZ.
The individual
We are looking for someone with sound independent judgment, diplomacy, and political astuteness, who has previous experience working in a Senior, Board, or Trustee position. The individual will be an established net-zero leader with an excellent understanding of climate change policy, and significant experience in the public sector delivering net-zero strategies across the UK. The individual must have a strong desire to serve the interests of the people of the Greater South East and uphold the effective use of public funds.
Time commitment & remuneration
There will be eight scheduled meetings (predominantly remote) of the NZH Board held each year, one meeting every six weeks. In addition to this, it is expected that there will be three Regional Advisory Board workshops and a Hub workshop that are held as part of the annual business planning and Board Development process. The role has an allowance of £19,200 pa (estimated at £800 per day at circa 2 days per month)
