Are you an experienced and proactive transport management professional? Our client is looking for a skilled Transport Manager to lead and optimise their vehicle fleet and depot network operations across the UK. This role is pivotal to ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective deliveries to depots and customers.


As the Transport Manager, you will oversee all aspects of the company's transport operations, from fleet management and compliance to depot efficiency and route optimisation. You will play a crucial role in achieving delivery targets, controlling costs, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, all while leading and developing a high-performing transport team.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Transport Operations Management:

  - Manage the daily operations of the company’s vehicle fleet, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and efficient vehicle use.

  - Develop strategies to optimise fleet, driver, and third-party logistics partner performance and meet delivery and budget targets.

  - Oversee trunking between depots and final mile deliveries, ensuring on-time, in-full (OTIF) delivery performance

  - Lead the transport planning team to ensure cost-effective route planning and delivery scheduling.  


2. Depot Management:

  - Ensure efficient management of depots, including lease/purchase arrangements and maintaining operational standards.  

  - Periodically review depot locations and operations to identify cost-saving opportunities and improve efficiency.  


3. Team Leadership and Development:

  - Lead, mentor, and develop a team of drivers, planners, and administrative staff, fostering a high-performance, safety-first culture.  

  - Set clear performance expectations, hold regular reviews, and ensure KPIs are consistently met.  

  - Promote effective employee relations, managing recruitment, absences, and performance issues.  


4. Financial Management:

  - Oversee the transport department’s budget, managing vehicle, fuel, and depot costs.  

  - Monitor financial performance, identify cost-saving initiatives, and take corrective actions to enhance operational efficiency.  


5. Compliance and Safety:  

  - Ensure full compliance with transport-related health and safety policies and regulatory requirements for vehicles and drivers.  

  - Investigate incidents, manage disciplinary processes, and ensure staff adhere to health and safety standards.  


6. Process Improvement:

  - Continuously improve transport operations by implementing best practices and technology solutions that optimise fleet and depot efficiency.  

  - Collaborate with senior leadership to drive process improvements that reduce costs and improve service levels.  


Cross-Training and Role Flexibility:

To ensure operational resilience, the Transport Manager will be cross-trained in the Operations Manager’s responsibilities, including warehouse processes and inventory control, providing seamless operational coverage when necessary.


Qualifications and Experience:

- Minimum of 3 years senior level experience in transport management, overseeing vehicle fleet and logistics operations.  

- Strong knowledge of UK transport regulations and vehicle compliance.  

- Proven experience in team leadership and development.  

- Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) and full clean UK driving licence.  

- Proficient in transport planning software and IT systems.
