The team

Our Real Estate group is one of the largest real estate teams in the UK, advising an impressive range of clients including commercial and residential developers, investors, major corporate occupiers and banks/funders. The role

The role of Lead for Legal Innovation within the Real Estate Division centres around the identification, design and implementation of innovative solutions to improve the efficiency and quality of our legal services in the Real Estate Division and across the wider firm.

You will sit on and work closely with our Legal Innovation Collaboration Group and Innovation Group as part of the Client Technology and Service Improvement directorate, helping to achieve the firm’s objective to focus on excellence and delivering our legal services smarter, better and faster.

The role will report directly into the Divisional Head of Real Estate and require working alongside senior stakeholders within the business. You will supervise a Real Estate Innovation Projects Assistant (REIPA) who supports the delivery of our legal innovation projects and legal tech products within the Real Estate Division (RED).

Main responsibilities Collaborating closely with legal teams to understand and address client needs effectively. Fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement with RED by driving a positive and forward-thinking mindset, being an advocate for innovation and change and influencing and inspiring teams to embrace new ways of working (and identifying and addressing resistance to change). Developing and executing the legal innovation strategy and roadmap for the Real Estate Division, aligned with the firm's strategy and goals. Researching and evaluating emerging technologies, tech suppliers, trends, and best practices in the legal and real estate sectors as well as proposing new ideas and solutions to enhance our legal services, our connected services (via Shoosmiths 8) and products. Participating in and driving firm-wide, business critical projects including by way of continuous improvement (such as the iManage DMS replacement project) and projects at the cutting edge of legal technology advancement. Participation in relevant committees including the Innovation Group, the Operations Committee, RED Exec and PSL team meetings, contributing insights and expertise to foster cohesion across legal functions. Conducting process and work-flow mapping to identify areas for potential improvement through innovation. Managing and overseeing the design, development, testing, and deployment of legal innovation projects and products, such as legal applications, platforms, tools, workflows, and templates, in collaboration with our lawyers, clients, and external partners. Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including senior management, legal advisors, clients, vendors, and the Risk and Ethics team while ensuring clear and timely communication and feedback. Monitoring and reporting on the performance, impact, and return on investment of legal innovation initiatives, and ensuring continuous improvement and quality assurance. Driving the adoption, use, and continuous improvement of RED’s legal innovation solutions and software applications through training and monitoring usage. Leading RED’s document automation program including document automation analysis and markup, questionnaire creation, instructing and project managing central document automation teams on individual document suites and high-volume ad hoc projects, managing pilot testing, rollout and adoption of automated documents in conjunction with the REIPA and PSL team. Managing RED technology supplier relationships (such as Avail, Kira, Searchflow and DocuSign), assisted by the REIPA, including continual assessment of alternative products and the real estate legal technology market, product demonstrations and testing, change management and onboarding new suppliers. Liaising with IS in relation to the infosec credentials of any such suppliers. Collaborating closely with the Partner for Client Tech & Service Improvement and other Divisional Heads of Legal Innovation, acting as a communication link between the divisions, directorates, business support functions, business managers, and central teams to promote the sharing of technical knowledge and systems information. Advising upon and assisting with the use of legal technology for ad hoc, large client projects to ensure that the best systems are adopted to deliver maximum efficiencies and excellent client service. Monitoring and reporting upon new-starter feedback relating to legal technology used at other firms. Preparing and circulating regular REDTech update emails within RED to highlight new software product features, guidance and to encourage adoption of technology. Providing ad hoc technical project assistance to business managers e.g. rate review project and workflow. Presenting at internal and external events on cutting edge technologies within the practice of law (such as AI) to develop understanding within the business and promote our technical reputation. Contributing to awards submissions, government white papers, thought leadership pieces and the firm’s annual impact statement in relation to the use of legal technology and innovation.
