Children's Neurodevelopmental Service (Autism and ADHD)

Recent investment and promotion in our service has created some exciting opportunities for psychologists who looking to work with children and young people with neurodevelopmental conditions. Depending on the post holders' current level of experience and training there will be a bespoke and structured competency and training programme developed with them to ensure they have the skills, knowledge and confidence to fulfill their role.

We are looking for a motivated and committed psychologist for a Band 8a post, or to apply as a Band 7 development post with the opportunity to progress to a Band 8a, via a supported process of professional development. We can offer flexibility in terms of working patterns, hours and location across Coventry and Warwickshire some of which can be addition, the Neurodevelopmental Service is part of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (RISE) and there is opportunity to work in more than one service according to areas of interest and expertise.

The Neurodevelopmental Service is heavily invested in providing high quality services. The postholder will work within our evidence-based pathways to deliver young-person focused assessment and clinically effective interventions for children and young people referred for autism and ADHD. Successful applicants will work within a supportive and proactive environment, we have a strong commitment to clinical supervision and there are opportunities for continuing professional development and training in line with service objectives.

The post-holder will join a large established group of psychologists and work as part of a multidisciplinary team which includes Paediatrics, Speech and Language Therapy, Psychiatry, Neurodevelopmental Practitioners and Occupational Therapy. This is a dynamic role and the post-holder may work within community settings such as schools, clinics and family homes. We are also offering virtual appointments.

Applicants will need to have a keen interest in developing new or existing skills in the use of diagnostic assessments for Neurodevelopmental Disorders. Experience of working with this population, either in children or adult services would be desirable however, interest and enthusiasm for working with neurodiverse children and young people is essential. The post also offers opportunities to contribute to service transformation and innovation, we have excellent links with local DClinPsy training programmes with current staff regularly providing teaching and placements and can provide the development of leadership skills through in-service experience and training.

Travel is an integral part of this post and the post-holder will be a car owner/driver, or have suitable alternative transport to meet the needs of the post (It is unlikely that public transport will meet this requirement). This post is subject to a Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure at Enhanced level.

Qualifications

Essential

Good honours degree in Psychology. Eligibility for Graduate Membership of the BPS PhD or DClinPsych or equivalent in Applied Psychology (Clinical/Counselling). Registered as an Applied Psychologist (Clinical/Counselling) with the HCPC/HPC Pre and post-qualification training in specialist assessment and treatment of people with neurodevelopmental disorders, assessment, research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology Post qualification training in one or more evidence based psychological approach ( CBT or systemic psychotherapy)

Knowledge and skills

Essential

Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration. Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS. Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups. Ability to practice independently within this clinical area (neurodevelopmental disorders). Doctoral level knowledge of audit and research methodology Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups Awareness of cultural and other diversity issues High-level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies. Ability to communicate highly complex condition-related information to young people and their families, often in an emotive and/or hostile environment. Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour. Proven knowledge and skills relevant to psychological approaches to children or Children/young people with neurodevelopmental disorders Ability to provide specialist clinical advice on an individual case basis. Ability to demonstrate team building, leadership and organisational skills. Demonstrates an understanding and ability to practice in a person / family centred way. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of clinical and clinical supervision skills.
