Teddington, United Kingdom National Physical Laboratory Full time

About the Role

Whether you’re talking about length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount or the brightness of light, the National Physical Laboratory sets the standards by which these things are all measured. At NPL, we touch ordinary lives in extraordinary ways and you could too.

Research is at the heart of all we do. In this vital role, you’ll help carry out a variety of technical activities that will help us resolve problems we’ve identified, to achieve positive outcomes. It’s very much a team effort. And whilst there’ll be a number of pre-determined activities, we’ll expect you to be proactive too – spotting commercial opportunities along the way. It’s also important that you strive to deepen your subject matter knowledge, sharing this as you go so that everyone benefits – championing your work and its importance. All of which you’ll complete on time, within budget and to the highest standards.
About You

The Radiofrequency and Microwave group, responsible for the UK’s National Standards of Microwave Measurements, is seeking to recruit additional staff. Our work supports many applications of radiofrequency technology including communications, remote sensing etc. both in the UK and overseas. As one of the World Leading groups in this technical area NPL deliver traceability to the SI, through world best measurements capabilities and measurement services, whilst concurrently working to develop the next generation of microwave standards.

The successful candidate will join a small team of scientists and engineers in a friendly, laboratory based environment. Initially the role will be to deliver radio frequency and microwave power calibrations following documented procedures, under a UKAS accredited quality system. Once trained the candidate will have the opportunity to participate in research and development activities, including the development of current and new facilities, and measurement capabilities. It is expected that as the candidate develops further opportunities to collaborate with other teams and participate in additional research activities, as part of the Electromagnetic & Electrochemical Technologies department would become available. Such activities would be supplementary to the core measurement service role.

This role would suit a variety of applicants from recently graduated apprentices through to university graduates or those returning to work following a career break. As NPL’s capabilities and mandate is almost unique, full training would be provided to the successful candidate. While a working knowledge of radio frequency and microwave technology is beneficial, the role is open to individuals with a general science background. A background in measurement and quality systems would be an advantage.

At NPL we learn from each other, respect each other and work together to do better, for ourselves and for our customers. And whilst we’re always looking to stretch beyond what we know, we don’t make things more complicated when there’s no need. Together, we’re helping make the impossible, possible.
