Job summary

The post holder will be a qualified midwife who will work clinically within our maternity services to support the needs of our newly qualified midwives during their preceptorship year. This is a fully clinical role, and the post holder will work the full range of shifts in all areas of the maternity service, in order to support newly qualified midwives to complete their preceptorship competencies in a timely manner.

The post holder will work with the preceptee midwives to enhance their experience, build confidence and establish a strong foundation for their future career.

The post holder will practice in a holistic, non-judgmental, caring and compassionate manner that avoids assumptions, supports social inclusion and recognises and respects individual choice and acknowledges diversity. They will work in partnership with other health and social care professionals, students and trainees and agencies, service users, their carers and families.

Main duties of the job

*The post holder will work according to the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour and relevant professional guidelines and be accountable for their own professional actions.

*The post holder must achieve and maintain competence in identified mandatory and statutory training, develop and maintain clinical competencies, skills and knowledge which relate to the area of clinical practice.

*Act as a role model, sharing effective practice and learning from others, promoting a high standard of safe and effective care which is based upon the best evidence.

*To work as an autonomous, accountable and experienced practitioner and a lead professional in the provision of care to women and their families.

*Provide clinical leadership, guidance and support to preceptees within a variety of clinical settings.

*Keep up to date with developments in midwifery practice, incorporating national and local recommendations into the preceptorship programme under the support and guidance of the Band 7 Preceptorship midwives.

*Recognise the knowledge, skills, attributes and competence of preceptee midwives at the point of registration, providing them with the appropriate resources to enable them to develop their confidence and practice.

*Supporting preceptees according to their individual learning needs, ensuring the approach is constructive and supportive.

* Significant recent experience working as a registered midwife post qualification * Experience of working with students/junior members of staff * Ability to work autonomously within professional and Trust guidelines * Knowledge and experience in caring for both low risk and high-risk women/neonates * Experience of working on own and in a team in a health care environment delegating to others within a team / providing supervision to others * Understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct * Understanding of preceptorship and work-based learning and assimilation of skills and knowledge * Understanding the importance of preceptorship
