This is a 2-year post to facilitate clinical research The postholder will lead innovation in the renal clinical trials space in this unique collaboration between the Universities of Glasgow and Dundee, the Scottish Renal Research Network and AstraZeneca, and study for a higher degree over a 2-year period.Research will form the major component of this post including participation in associated clinical duties. This role will allow the development of research skills and production of data which the postholder should use to develop a research thesis leading to an MD. We’re looking to transform the conduct of renal trials and improve kidney care for patients in Scotland through improving referral networks for studies, deployment of novel data science techniques including ground-breaking machine learning and targeted interventions to improve care at a local level. You will work with Professor Patrick Mark (University of Glasgow) and a co-clinical supervisor from AstraZeneca to define objectives around driving rapid recruitment into three large CKD clinical trials which are starting in 2024-2025. Your role initially will be to strengthen referral networks between local healthcare providers and the University to improve recruitment of CKD patients to studies who could benefit from further intervention. You’ll also meet with data scientists within NHS Scotland and within AstraZeneca to work on further developing ways to identify patients for trial recruitment using traditional data science techniques, and with teams developing novel machine learning techniques to predict CKD progression. Finally, you’ll begin to develop links with your chosen global study team, where you can delve deeply into the science of one of the compounds under development and have the opportunity to participate in science publications with AstraZeneca colleagues. Main Duties and Responsibilities • Develop ways of identifying patients for trial recruitment using both traditional and novel machine learning methodology.• Develop an in-depth knowledge of clinical trials development working with industry.• Manage data handling and interpretation of research results and take the lead in writing papers for publication in appropriate peer-reviewed journals.• Accumulate a significant body of work of the standard required for submission for examination for a Higher Degree (MD).• Keep up to date with recent literature and advances in the field.• Present work at internal and external seminars and national/ international conferences as appropriate to enhance the profile of the research group.• Manage research according to Good Clinical Practice for Research standards• Undertake clinical work under an NHS honorary contract as detailed below. He/she will be strongly encouraged and supported to complete research leading to a Higher Degree. **The Post - General Information **Clinical Research Fellowships offer medical graduates the opportunity for training in a range of research methodologies relevant to modern biomedical research in Medicine and related specialities. Most Clinical Fellows will undertake research training to consolidate career prospects, by participating in relevant research, which will usually form part of a further qualification or Higher degree (MSc, MD, PhD). Further funding may be required to achieve this. Registration for an MD/PhD will be strongly encouraged and the research will be planned with successful attainment of a degree in mind. The post should make individuals competitive for future NHS teaching hospital appointment or Academic Lecturer/Clinician Scientist awards. Research Training  All Clinical Research Fellows will have a mentor assigned at the time of appointment. The mentor will usually become the supervisor for any matriculated Higher Degree (see below). Clinical Research Fellows are encouraged to attend workshops and training in generic transferable skills organised by the School of Medicine Graduate School. Regular attendance and contributions to research meetings of their group is expected. Higher Degrees  Clinical Research Fellows will usually undertake study towards a Higher Degree in the University of Glasgow. In the first instance the university usually requires this to be an MSc where funding beyond one year is uncertain or until assessment of progress during year one justifies transfer to an MD or PhD programme (without delaying final submission). In addition to an academic supervisor, all postgraduate students will have an independent adviser. Clinical Work For registered medical practitioners, an honorary NHS contract will be sought and will usually be at the grade of Honorary ST3-8 (as dictated by clinical experience). In addition to clinical activities required for research training such as recruitment to trials and conduct of clinical research, this post requires the candidate to contribute to a vascular access clinic each week. Where any clinical activities of a service nature extend beyond the usual working week, confirmation in advance of any such responsibilities and agreement on additional payments must be obtained from appropriate NHS Services management. The individual will have a contract with the NHS Services via the appropriate directorate/division, which will specify the agreed amount of clinical work and the level of remuneration. Since the funding for this post does not include an element for clinical training or NHS service work, any such clinical work must be arranged to avoid impacting substantially on research time. Research Training Base The Clinical Research Fellow will be based in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health with clinical activity at Glasgow Renal and Transplant unit based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES Mentorship from supervisors who are internationally recognised may be supplemented by access to relevant parts of local courses including the Graduate School’s tutorial programme. For example, sections on biostatistics, ethics, research governance, measurement methods, reporting and writing skills will be valuable. Research Supervision Supervision will be provided by Professor Patrick Mark, Professor of Nephrology at the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health Teaching There will be no regular commitment to teaching but research fellows are encouraged to contribute to both problem-based learning and clinical teaching sessions for undergraduate medical students when research commitments allow. Assessment of Progress • All those matriculated for Higher Degrees will be subject to the Postgraduate School of the College for progress monitoring programme. This is done according to the regulations set down in the University Calendar.• Written progress reports on projects on a monthly basis.• Research in Progress presentations, at least annually, to the Institute• Reports/manuscripts of results of clinical trials undertaken, as appropriate.• General assessment during clinical work and meetings.• Annual interview by independent assessors. Future Research fellows will either return to run-through training, be supported for further internal or externally funded fellowship to complete a MD or PhD, or may become eligible for an academic training post. Standard Terms & Conditions Salary will be on the Clinical Research Fellow scale This post is full time and fixed term for up to 24 months Although this activity constitutes part of the job, the management of the clinical activity will be the full responsibility of the NHS Organisation. In the unlikely event that the NHS Organisation withdraws the honorary contract, the University will not be able to continue this post and notice of termination will be served. The successful applicant (if aged under 60) will be eligible to join the Universities’ Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits. All research and related activities, including grants, donations, clinical trials, contract research, consultancy and commercialisation are required to be managed through the University’s relevant processes (e.g. contractual and financial), in accordance with the University Court’s policies. Disclosure Scotland The post for which you are applying is considered to be a child care position in terms of The Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003. It requires the successful applicant to undergo a satisfactory Disclosure check through Disclosure Scotland prior to appointment. This check is necessary to ensure that the University of Glasgow fulfils its legal duties under the Act. If you are successful in your application, the offer of employment will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure Report. The University will make a Disclosure application to Disclosure Scotland, which will reveal any past criminal convictions (spent or unspent) or inclusion on the Disqualified from Working with Children List. Any non-conviction information held locally by the police may also be disclosed should this be considered relevant to the position.
