Role Summary

An exciting role has opened up for a Specialist Occupational Therapist in Surgery and Intensive Care at North Devon District Hospital. You will be based within the Inpatient Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy team to provide specialist assessment, treatment and advice to patients, carers, on the General Surgery wards and Intensive Care. 

The post is to support the existing Advanced Occupational Therapy role, and there will be opportunities to develop the service with Senior staff including widening the role within the Intensive care unit.

You would be part of a well-established Surgical/Intensive Care Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy team (Trauma, Emergency and Elective). The team has a forward-thinking approach to Healthcare and rehabilitation.

The Surgical/Intensive Care team sit within a wider Therapy team that covers Acute Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Care of the elderly, including rehabilitation for patients with Dementia, and Orthopaedics.

The post will be based on KGV (Emergency) and Lundy (Elective) wards, with input on Intensive Care.

The elective surgery covers; Urology, Colorectal surgery, Gynaecology, Abdominal wall repairs and occasionally other Oncology conditions. 

There will be an expectation to work across other areas of the team when required.

Opportunities within this role include:

To enhance and extend your assessment, intervention and clinical decision-making skills. Set patient specific goals for rehabilitation.  To work with the patient, family, carers and MDT to increase patient’s independence.  Supervising junior staff with their development and progression within their roles. Service development and teaching opportunities. Working as a Multidisciplinary team including support from an integrated team of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists.

You should have relevant experience working at a junior level, or equivalent level with comprehensive experience of assessment and treatment of patients with a wide range of complex conditions.

You will be required to be an autonomous Practitioner, to be up to date with evidence-based practice and be able to assess and treat patients who have complex needs.

Career development and progression: 

The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is keen to support staff to develop clinical skills through regular supervision and internal and external professional development opportunities. There will be opportunities to develop your skills as a Clinical Supervisor with Students, Junior Therapists and Therapy Clinical Support Workers. We'll support you in finding the best way to grow. 

Working hours per week, Monday to Friday. Additional weekend working as per rotas.
