Job summary

We are looking for an experienced, caring person to work within our existing therapy team providing a high standard of care as part of the inpatient Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy service.

As a Therapy Assistant Practitioner, you will provide clinical assessment and treatments under the supervision of qualified staff, be responsible for assisting in the triaging, prioritisation, and new patient assessments, review of equipment and care needs, delivery of rehabilitation programmes and discharge planning for your patients.

The post holder will work alongside a multi-disciplinary team in an acute in-patient ward at Northwick Park Hospital but may be asked to undertake duties at Central Middlesex Hospital or Ealing Hospital as the service requires.

Previous experience in a similar role is essential, whilst area specific training will be provided. Excellent inter-personal skills are also essential as you will be required to liaise with clinicians, patients / carers, and GPs, as appropriate.

All successful candidates will be included in departmental in-service training programmes, and as of 2022 may also be eligible to apply for a position on the London North-West University Healthcare NHS Trust BSc Occupational Therapy Apprenticeship Programme.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard of care as part of the therapy team, assessing and treating patients with reduced functional ability, resulting from a variety of conditions, to facilitate maximal recovery of function and co-ordinated, timely discharges from hospital and therapy.

To assist the Physiotherapist/Occupational Therapist in carrying out delegated duties within the clinical specialty.

To treat patients according to agreed protocols making minor amendments within guidelines set by the Physiotherapist/Occupational Therapist.

To work without direct supervision with a designated non-complex caseload, including assessments of patient transfers and mobility, rehabilitation programmes and functional activity of daily living assessments.

To facilitate the assessment for patient's function including cognitive assessments, transfers, and mobility and for the provision of equipment to assist with daily activities.

To act as a first contact with patients at times and managing own caseload with support from Physiotherapist/Occupational Therapist.

To assess and promote independence of patients with their personal care and kitchen tasks.

To assist in clerical/administration duties directly related to patient activity facilitating smooth running of the service.

To provide supervision of staff of a lower grade under the supervision of Physiotherapist/Occupational Therapist if appropriate

Education/ qualifications

Essential

oNVQ level III or Part I City and Guilds or experience to an equivalent level.

Desirable

oEvidence of continued professional development within the field of therapy.

Knowledge and experience

Essential

oWorking within a hospital environment oAbility to work independently. oAble to work alone and as part of a team. oTo accept change and help support others during times of transition. oAbility to carry out delegated duties independently. oKnowledge of multi-disciplinary working , team meetings, case conferences.

Desirable

oRelevant working experience within therapy environment or as a therapy assistant or equivalent. oAbility to mentor and support staff of a lower grade. oUnderstands own boundaries and knows when to report to senior staff.

Skills, abilities and attributes

Essential

oKnowledge of how to assess a patient transfer and mobility. oKnowledge and experience of functional activity of daily living assessments. oAbility to devise simple exercise programs based on assessment findings. oAbility to present information, written and oral, in a clear and logical manner. oAbility to organise and prioritise. oGood communication, and ability to adapt communication methods where necessary. oBasic IT skills. oKnowledge of Information Governance and confidentiality. oAble to work with both physical and emotional demand of the role , physically demonstrate exercises for patients to follow, carry out moderate to intense physical effort throughout the working day and work with emotional or aggressive patients and carers. oAble to perform therapy skills such as passive and active range of movement treatments.

oKnowledge and experience of cognitive screen/assessment. oKnowledge of assessing and promoting independence with personal care and kitchen tasks. oKnowledge of assessment for provision of equipment to assist with daily activities. oTo possess technical skills within the area of work. oCommitment to develop new clinical and non-clinical skills from qualified staff.
