Teaching Personnel are working with one of our partner secondary schools who are looking to appoint a HLTA to join their team. The school celebrates the wellbeing of their staff, with retention being at it's highest than any other school in Northamptonshire. The school is a dynamic academy with a relentless focus on high standards. They aim to create a positive learning environment where the street stops at the gate and where they help every student to succeed. They provide excellent teaching skills and commitment from staff and this in turn generates enthusiasm and hard work from the students. Their purposeful learning environment supports the students to achieve beyond expectations and challenges them to improve on their personal best.

A love of learning is their priority and they have a House system which supports students in their academic and personal development.

Core Description

  • Supporting individuals or groups of students within lessons across the academy
  • Teaching of Literacy/EAL/Numeracy/Multi-Disciplinary subject areas across all phases
  • Social, emotional and mental health teaching and coaching
  • Daily communication with teachers about strategies to use to support groups or individuals and the curriculum being taught
  • Planning and delivery of intervention sessions and planning of in-lesson support (for example, reading lesson content ahead of supporting in a lesson)
  • Specialist cognition, sensory and physical support knowledge in order to facilitate individual and group access to learning.  The ability to assist teachers in effective strategies to best support children with specific additional needs

Examples of Duties

‘Pupils’ includes work with individual pupils as well as groups and whole classes.

  • Planning, preparing and delivering intervention for pupils;
  • Making sure that the pupils you support are able to engage in learning and stay on task during the lesson or activity so they can become independent learners;
  • Assessing the development, progress and attainment of pupils;
  • Reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils;
  • Maintaining and collating records of pupil needs and progress;
  • On occasion, supporting disengaged pupils and attending to emotional or physical needs;
  • Working independently and under the direction of the line manager to undertake a range of tasks including intervention programmes to support learning e.g. supporting literacy and numeracy work, listening to reading etc.;
  • Undertaking tasks to support the curriculum and assisting with events organised as part of the curriculum e.g. organising and scheduling pupils' annual review meetings;
  • Working with pupils, either one-to-one or in small groups, some of whom may have Special Educational Needs;
  • Assisting teaching staff to ensure that the aims and objectives of the academy are achieved;
  • Developing and maintaining effective links with other agencies to maximise resources available in the school;
  • At key times, provide support outside of your normal classes, for example supporting during exams, covering other colleague’s absences or going on school trips
  • Attending meetings, e.g. whole school staff meetings/curriculum development meetings, team meetings and parent meetings
  • Attending and contributing to SENDand other review meetings if required by the line manager and, where appropriate, disseminating information to other Teaching Assistants; 
  • Help with extracurricular activities such as homework club, after-school clubs, and revision sessions
  • Complete relevant administrative tasks, for example creating or updating a pupil’s support plan
