You will join us in a key support function delivering the Health and Safety arrangements across our diverse range of activities - hospice care, office support, retail operations and fundraising.

Location:This is a home based, or dual based role with extensive travel throughout the South West including our three hospice sites (Little Bridge House, Charlton Farm and Little Harbour) and circa 40 retail outlets.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Head of Facilities (Retail, Compliance, Environmental) our H&S competent person you will:

Provide expert advice, guidance and support to management and staff on all health and safety matters.

Maintain high standards of H&S to comply with our obligations and best practice. Promote a culture of H&S awareness Help develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures. Assist with managing the CHSW H&S Plan, ensuring compliance withhealth and safety legislation and regulations. Investigate and report accidents, incidents, and near-misses, and recommend corrective actions. Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits across all hospice and retail outlet locations. Maintain accurate records and documentation related to health and safety activities. Ensure staff and volunteers are appropriately trained across all locations.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Overall Purpose of the Role

To work with the Compliance Team to help all departments within CHSW achieve their Health and Safety (H&S) goals:

Working with the H&S competent person this will include:

Assisting hospice (Care, Fundraising and Business support) and retail managers in achieving statutory H&S requirements and best practice

Liaising with enforcement agencies (HSE/EHO) and emergency services

Providing advice on Permits to Work and safe systems of work

Providing H&S advice to staff, volunteers and contractors on specific tasks and activities

Supporting Managers to ensure that high standards of H&S exist at all hospice sites including in the shops and at events etc.

Identification of the health and safety training needs and the design and delivery of appropriate training

Support retail with the new shop opening and refurbishment process

Design and develop digital systems to support the work of the H&S Compliance Team.

2. Main Tasks

Working with the Head of Facilities (Compliance) to support the implementation of the CHSW H&S Policies and Procedures

This will include working with the H&S competent person to:

Maintaining CHSWs comprehensive set of H&S policies and procedures

Providing advice regarding policy updates as required by legislative changes

Developing training materials, induction, fire safety, etc.

Providing or delivering training for staff and volunteers to ensure full understanding of compliance with H&S related issues including regular mandatory training

Carrying out appropriate audits and monitoring of H&S systems, including fire safety

Ensuring that H&S policies and risk assessments cover all Hospice operations including, for example, health care, events, trading, promotions, fundraising, education, social enterprise, maintenance, contractual work, security and all other activities that may arise from time to time.

To support the Head of Facilities (Compliance) with managing the CHSW Health and Safety Plan (Plan, Do, Check, Act).

This will include:

Maintain the CHSW Health and Safety Plan with prioritised actions

Undertaking, with relevant staff, actions to improve Health and Safety as per the plans priorities

Regularly reviewing the plan to ensure that issues are addressed

To work with the Head of Facilities (Compliance) to report H&S activities and issues to Directors, Heads, Trustees and external agencies

This will include:

Working with the Head of Facilities to liaise regularly with Directors, Head of Quality and Compliance and the Chief Executive on H&S matters

Providing information to Directors and Trustees of the status of H&S within the organisation on an on-going basis

Managing the reporting of accidents and incidents reportable under RIDDOR 2013

To contribute to, developing and embedding a culture of positive, active, sustainable Health and Safety Management within CHSW

This will include supporting with:

Producing and reviewing existing risk assessments, including fire risk assessments at each location and ensure that they are up to date and complete

Ensuring all H&S Management Plans are up to date Legionella, Asbestos, evacuation plans.

Ensuring that effective, relevant risk assessments are carried out to an appropriate standard

Maintaining a register of risk assessments and ensuring that they are reviewed on a regular basis

Providing appropriate training and support to staff to enable them to carry out risk assessments within their area of responsibility

Training staff so that they are aware of their responsibilities and obligations under H&S legislation

Support the Compliance Team with monitoring and investigating accidents when required.

3. General Responsibilities

responsibility around safeguarding children and to ensure that you have completed training at a level commensurate with your role.

To be aware of the responsibilities placed on you under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and any subsequent relevant legislation and follow these in full at all times ensuring that they act in line with all agreed procedures at all times in order to maintain a safe environment and identification of potential risks for all employees, children, families and visitors, taking action as and when required.

To regularly update and maintain your knowledge of safety rules; fire drills; internal security; and accident procedures and adhere to these at all times. To be aware of the safety needs of children, siblings, parents and other staff and adopt a preventative safety approach at all times. Report all accidents and incidents accurately and promptly to the appropriate responsible person.

To maintain confidentiality of information about clients, children, families, staff, and other CHSW business and at all times, meet the requirements of the Data Protection Act (1998), as well as comply with all CHSW Information Governance and Data Protection policies.

Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job, participate in an annual appraisal and appropriate training activities, encourage and support staff development and training. To attend mandatory training.

To work within infection control guidelines to ensure that work methods do not constitute a risk of infection to other work colleagues, children, families, or to any persons working/visiting in CHSW premises.

Take responsibility for your own emotional well-being; taking steps to maintain a balance between work and home life; and to be aware of the importance of maintaining professional boundaries.

To be aware of the need to use the resources of CHSW wisely and effectively to meet the needs of children and their families, but maintaining a cost-conscious approach and regard to the environment.

4. Working Arrangements

Your normal hours of work are from 09:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Thursday and 09:00am to 4:30pm on Friday with an hour for lunch.

You may be asked to work additional hours as necessary which may include unsocial hours outside the above times for which TOIL will normally be given, rather than payment. This may include occasional overnight stays.

You will be expected to flex you time during a working week to keep toil to a minimum.
