Job summary

We are looking for a Senior Respiratory Clinical Physiologist who will hold responsibility for performing and reporting many simple, advanced and complex/specialist procedures.

Principal objectives :

Provide a comprehensive clinical respiratory investigative service and a comprehensive sleep investigative service to patients of all ages referred from a wide range of specialities from across the region. Perform simple, advanced and complex/specialist clinical respiratory diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Provide reports and interpretation of resultswhere appropriate. Undertake clinical supervision and training of junior Lung Function Unit staff

Main duties of the job

To plan, undertake and perform a wide range of respiratory and sleep procedures including complex/specialist investigations in the Lung Function Unit as well as on the wards in accordance with the professional body guidelines/standards (ARTP) and in accordance with European Respiratory Society/American Thoracic Society criteria.

Investigations include:

Spirometry testing - time-volume, flow-volume, peak flow rates and postural spirometry. Bronchodilator response tests (reversibility studies) to inhaled and nebulised drugs. Static lung volume measurements - helium dilution and body plethysmography techniques. Gas transfer measurements. Skin prick allergy tests. Field exercise tests - six minute walking tests and supplementary oxygen assessments. Respiratory muscle strength assessments - postural spirometry, maximal mouth pressures and sniff tests. Assessments for air travel - hypoxic challenge tests. Bronchial provocation tests - methacholine challenge testing and exercise induced asthma tests. Fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) assessments. Basic sleep investigations - overnight hospital or home oximetry assessments. Full respiratory/multi-channel sleep studies/polysomnography. CPAP/NIV assessment and provision of therapy. Monitoring and evaluation of CPAP therapy. Full cardio-pulmonary exercise testing (CPET). *

Qualifications

BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Respiratory Physiology) or equivalent qualification Professional body qualification ( Association of Respiratory Physiology and Technology (ARTP) National Assessment Part 1 and 2) or equivalent RCCP/ACHS registration or equivalent, HCPC

Desirable

Specialist Respiratory/Sleep training Training and assessment qualifications

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

Knowledge of routine and advanced Respiratory/Sleep investigations Knowledge of some specialist Respiratory/Sleep Physiological investigations Able to interpret and report basic Respiratory/Sleep investigation results and patient conditions Ability to motivate and encourage patients to successfully perform and complete physically demanding tests Dexterity and hand-eye coordination to facilitate equipment use during dynamic tests/manoeuvres Commitment to continue in-service, National and mandatory training Maintain a safe working environment
