Exeter, United Kingdom Long-term Teachers Ltd Full time

Role: 1:1 Learning Support Assistant

Location: Exeter

Contract: Full time, fixed term contract

Salary: Starting at £14.45 per hour

Are you looking for a deeply rewarding role where your resilience and dedication can make a real difference? We have an exciting opportunity for a Learning Support Assistant to work on a 1:1 basis at a remarkable special educational needs school in Exeter, providing exceptional education and care for boys with social, emotional and mental health needs.

About the role:

This role is based at a small, all-boys school, where you will be supporting a young boy in year 6 throughout his education. The student will need educational support and often gets overstimulated/overwhelmed. You will play a key role in recognising this and providing appropriate breaks and interventions to allow this student to thrive. As well as academic support, you will also focus on supporting the emotional wellbeing of students, not just the student you are allocated to. The young people you’ll work with may have experienced trauma, have ADHD, autism, or other complex needs, making resilience a crucial quality for this role.

Key qualities:

  • Resilient: You must have the strength and determination to manage challenging situations calmly and effectively
  • Relational approach: Build strong, trusting relationships with students to support their development
  • Excellent behaviour management: Maintain a positive and controlled classroom environment
  • Good work ethic: Be prepared to engage fully with the students, supervising them through the day, including lunch
  • Sense of humour: A light-hearted approach can often help in building rapport and easing difficult moments
  • Boundaries: Set and maintain clear, consistent boundaries with students
  • Adaptability: Be ready to adjust to changes at short notice and handle unexpected situations with ease

What We Offer:

Our school is committed to supporting the wellbeing of all staff. You’ll receive full training and ongoing support, including daily safeguarding meetings and access to counselling services. You'll be part of a close-knit, friendly, and supportive team that values collaboration and mutual support.

Previous experience in education is desirable. A background in care or support settings can provide a strong foundation for success in this role. You will be working Monday to Friday, term time only.

If you have the resilience, dedication, and passion to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young people with SEMH needs, we strongly encourage you to apply.

Working with Long-term Teachers:
