Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Genomics Clinical Lead to join the National Strategic Network for Cancer, which is part of the NHS Wales Executive, hosted by Public Health Wales. The National Strategic Network for Cancer brings together medical, clinical and project professionals in a supportive and dynamic team. Our programmes are driven by clinical knowledge, patient experience, research and through embracing new technologies and developments in cancer care.

We are seeking a Genomics Clinical Lead to join the existing team, to work collaboratively providing specialist knowledge and leadership, supporting an All-Wales approach. This role comprises two clinical sessions per week. The successful candidate would need to be working at consultant level, to take on this challenging role which will provide clinical leadership, strategic direction and expertise for the Cancer Treatment Programme. They will act as a professional resource and advisor, to provide support and guidance on all matters concerning cancer genomics and will lead on a range of projects and objectives to develop and improve national guidance and processes, patient experience, and strengthen collaboration with colleagues working across Wales.

The successful candidate/s will need to demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal and motivational skills as the successful delivery of this work in Wales is dependent on collaborative working and the ability to develop strong relationships.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

Have strong clinical leadership skills providing direction and oversight to the network fostering a culture of clinical engagement.

Build strong working relationships with JCC, AWMGS, Welsh Government, national imaging programmes, national pathology programmes, Cancer Site Groups (CSGs) and Health Board / Trust clinical staff working in oncology-specific genetic services within Wales.

Actively work with clinical colleagues and representative bodies across Wales promoting the priorities and work programme of the Cancer Network.

Ensure that there is appropriate clinical engagement within the portfolio area by promoting the benefits of clinical engagement of colleagues in service re-design and transformation.

Actively participate in collaborative opportunities, nationally and internationally to gather intelligence and insight to inform innovation in support of local and national priorities.

Contribute to and lead where appropriate, national workshops and events with other key stakeholders to increase engagement and promote networking.

Forge excellent working relationships with clinicians, health board and trust management teams, academic, potential commissioners and third sector organisations.

Qualifications

Essential

Full GMC registration or working at a consultant level. Knowledge of Welsh Government and NHS Wales policy context. Knowledge of national agendas for cancer policy. Evidence of relevant Continuing Professional Development.

Desirable

Academic publications/ Presentations. Demonstrate involvement in and enthusiasm for developing capability for improvement and system leadership. Specialist qualification / training in genomics oncology.

Experience

Essential

Currently working as a Consultant, with a specialist interest in genomics oncology . Experience of the provision of care within the cancer pathway. Previous formal experience of clinical leadership within an NHS organisation. Experience of leading, managing and implementing change. Experience in audit, research and contribution to delivering evidence based pathway change. Experience of working with senior management in affecting the development of strategy. Experience of managing and chairing large groups of managers and clinicians.

Desirable

Ability to lead and deliver significant clinical changes. Experience of working with senior management in assuring a strategic approach to implementing change. Work with key stakeholders NHS Wales, Welsh Government. Present at National and International conferences. Interest in implementing research into practice.

Knowledge

Essential

Knowledge of Welsh Government and NHS Wales policy context. Knowledge of National Cancer policy, and the network work plan.

Desirable

Knowledge and clear insight into current challenges facing NHS Wales and in particular within genomics oncology. Evidence of health care research or innovative service developments.
