Job summary

Within this role, you will provide clinical leadership to the Acute(A2) pathway wards (Norbury, Thames and Spring) as the lead on the planning,coordination and delivery of Occupational Therapy assessment and interventionswithin the Acute wards.

Thames Ward is a medium secure, forensic acute admission ward in RiverHouse, at Bethlem Royal Hospital. Thames ward is where everyone is firstadmitted to at River House to determine what treatment and care they needwithin the unit. Norbury Ward is a medium secure inpatient psychiatricintensive care unit (PICU) in River House at Bethlem Royal Hospital. This ward providespsychiatric assessment, treatment and care for men, aged 18-65, who have ahistory of offending behaviour. On this ward you will work closely with teamsof health and social care professionals throughout the hospital, includingpsychiatrists, mental health nurses, social workers, occupational therapistsand psychologists nursing and psychology. Lastly, Spring Ward is a forensicservice in River House Medium Secure Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital that provideassessment, treatment, rehabilitation and care for women, aged over 18, whohave a range of mental health problems.

Main duties of the job

The South London & Maudsley NHS Trust provides a full range of mental health services to people of Southwark, Lewisham, Lambeth and Croydon as well as substance misuse services for people in

Bexley, Greenwich and Bromley. The Trust provides specialist services to people from across the UK.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To ensure service users recovery goals and plansare at the centre of Occupational Therapy practice and fosters skills andconfidence of people to enable them to live as independently as possible.

To have an element of clinical input throughgroup work or individual complex cases. Using evidence based / client centredprinciples to assess, plan, implement and evaluate occupationally focusedinterventions for adults within the acute stage of their illness.

To evaluate occupationally focused interventionsacross the Acute pathway, and particularly for adults with severe volitionalchallenge.

To provide specialist advice on the assessmentand intervention of clients occupational needs within the Acute pathway andacross the inpatient services as clinically indicated.

To take the lead in monitoring, development andevaluation of the necessary standards to ensure high quality, evidence basedand cost-efficient service provision.

To work as part of a Multi Professional Teamproviding care for patients in the Acute Forensic pathway.

To provide profession specific supervision toOccupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy technicians and Activitypractitioners, so as to monitor and implement professional standards ofpractice including input to staff appraisal and continuing professionaldevelopment.

To provide guidance on Occupational TherapyModels of practice such as MOHO, Ayres Sensory integration and have knowledgeof working within forensic services.

To liaise with other Occupational Therapycolleagues across BDP in and establish systems that promote effectivecommunication and best access to relevant services.

To provide clinical leadership for junior staffand students through supervision and training

To support placement education and placementeducators in taking OT students on practice placement.

To provide training and consultancy foroccupationally focused interventions within the Directorate.

Toact as a resource for the BDP leadership, deputise when necessary and carry outdelegated duties and projects as requested.

Qualifications

Essential

HCPC registration Degree in Occupational Therapy

Experience

Essential

2 years post reg experience working with MH service users at Band 6 Level Adult Mental Health and Forensic experience is mandatory

Desirable

In addition to experience, all Qualified roles will be required to provide evidence of: Relevant Qualifications Registration with the relevant Registration Body if applicable.
