Job summary

You will be joining a clinical team of 4 Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologists, 2 Clinical Fellows, 2 Junior Doctors, 3 Optometrists, 12 Orthoptists and 2 Nurses who all work closely together to deliver care to our children and young people. Our patient cohort encompasses large numbers of difficult conditions which are often seen in specialist clinics including retinoblastoma, paediatric cataract, uveitis, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, ciliopathy and rare diabetes, retinal, craniofacial, contact lens, inherited metabolic diseases. As a result we have embraced the extended role of the Orthoptist to include IOP pressure measurement, fundus and digital photography, contact lens insertion and removal management and orthoptic lead medical clinics. You will provide clinical services within a hospital and community outreach setting. You will also be part of a team of senior orthoptists who are responsible for the day-to-day management of the Eye Department under the leadership of the Head Orthoptist. The team ensures all clinical activity runs smoothly and troubleshoots problems as they happen. You will be working within a senior team responsible for leading specialist clinics, outreach community clinics, orthoptic led clinics, student teaching, departmental teaching/training and paediatric contact lens clinics for the Department. CPD is actively promoted within the department and time is provided for administrative duties.

Main duties of the job

To provide autonomous orthoptic management of all types of ocular motility defects and be responsible for highly specialized and complex patients including direct implementation of treatment over a range of conditions in many patient types within a hospital and community outreach setting.

To use specialist skills to diagnose and treat all conditions as necessary using advanced clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice.

To support and advise junior staff within the department, providing mentorship as appropriate.

To provide day to day leadership, specialist support and development within the Eye Department.

To act as lead in specified specialist areas.

To provide teaching, supervision and assessment of students and other health care professionals.
