About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Beamline Scientist to join the I15 beamline team, to collaborate with the Principal Beamline Scientist in the preparation and optimisation of the beamline for Diamond-II.
I15 is based on a wiggler insertion device. A double crystal monochromator delivers X-rays in the energy range from 20 to 80 keV. KB mirror systems are used for focussing the X-ray beam. I15 operates two endstations. One endstation is designed around a 6-circle diffractometer and builds a very versatile platform for many experiments. The other endstation is dedicated to micro-focus and high-pressure laser-heating experiments. The beamline is dedicated to high-energy X-ray scattering experiments, in particular powder and single-crystal diffraction experiments. Research topics include fundamental Physics and Chemistry, Earth and Planetary Science as well as Materials Science and Engineering.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the development and implementation of the I15 endstation upgrade and contribute to the design and commissioning of a new monochromator for I15 in preparation for Diamond-II.
Responsibilities will include:
Collaborating on beamline upgrades and development projects, including taking specific responsibility for certain components of the beamline such as the design, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning phases. Managing the day-to-day coordination of support groups at Diamond to implement beamline upgrade projects, to improve the quality of the beamline, develop solutions for emerging problems, and ensure its smooth operation. Providing operational support for the beamline, including responsibility for the day-to-day safe operation of the beamline, interact closely with the users of the facility. Acting as a single point of contact (Local Contact) for a proportion of user experiments providing specialist technical/scientific advice. Developing own research in an area relevant to the beamline and disseminate the results.About You
You will have an appropriate first degree or equivalent qualification, and a PhD / second degree in a relevant science or engineering area.
You will also have experience in the following areas:
Beamline instrumentation and X-ray optics Powder diffraction and / or single-crystal diffraction and / or total scattering Data processing and analysis for XRD The use of high-energy X-rays in large-scale facilities.Benefits
