About therole:

• In this role youwill advise influence and make recommendations to senior managementworking creatively to sustain and support the continual developmentof the health and safety strategy culture policy andgovernance.
• Responsible for leading managingand delivering a professional health and safety support team toensure that health and safety arrangements and related elements ofWSI operations are implemented to achieve not just compliance butgood practices in all areas of theInstitute.

Responsibilitiesof the role:

• Beresponsible in partnership with the WSI Chief Operating Officer forformulation promotion and the sustained development of the WSIhealth and safety strategy. To provide a management system forcompliance with relevant health and safety statutory provisions andrelated disciplines.
• Alongside the seniorhealth and safety advisers drive the implementation and be thechange agent who leads continual improvement of the health andsafety strategy advising coaching and influencing Directors seniormanagers and team leaders as necessary to enable them to deliveragreed objectives.
• To work with the Director ofEstates so that health and safety compliance is incorporated andassured in the design construction or demolition occupancyservicing maintenance and operation of the WSI infrastructure. Workcollaboratively with embedded contractor organisations to ensureeffective control of risks created by their workactivities.
• To lead direct motivate and supportthe staff of the WSI Health Safety team in the delivery of highquality pragmatic advice and support functions facilitatingcompliance with relevant health and safety provisions and relateddisciplines through the implementation of the health and safetystrategy and health and safety managementsystem.
• To undertake the recruitment retentionperformance management and development of the WSI Health and Safetyteam to ensure the acquisition and maintenance of the appropriateskills and competences to deliver the WSI health and safetystrategy. Work with the team leads to support the continuingprofessional development of the WSI health and safetyteam.
• To cooperate and communicate effectivelyon health and safety matters with the Wellcome Genome Campuslandlord company and other tenant entities
• Tomanage communication with enforcing authorities e.g. Health SafetyExecutive Fire Authority Environment Agency and Police CounterTerrorism and Security Team on issues relating to health and safetyand related fields to ensure the Institute is representedappropriately and communication is informed andauthoritative.
• To engage with and participatein relevant and appropriate networks in the health and safety andrelated professional communities to acquire and exchange knowledgeof best practice and contribute to its development. Providebenchmark data to the executive boards of the WSI for performancecomparison.

EssentialsSkillsRequired:

• Educated todegree level in an appropriate scientificdiscipline
• NEBOSH Diploma or acceptableequivalent (including at higherlevel)
• Chartered member of the Institution ofOccupational Safety and Health CMIOSH orCFIOSH
• Substantial work experience in a seniorhealth and safety role within a scientific / biological researchenvironment
• High level interpersonal andwritten communication skills to be able to convey complexinformation in simple terms; to present ideas and solutions; tolisten analyse and respond effectively to complex and difficultsituations
• Demonstrable ability to engage withpersuade and influence others at all levels to secure commitmentand cooperation
• Experience of successfullydeveloping and implementing strategy within a complexorganisation
• Experience of leading andmotivating teams in a complex dynamicenvironment
• Proven ability of leading andsuccessfully managing a team of health and safety professionals inthe provision and delivery of an effective responsive and customerfocused health and safety support
• Proven staffmanagement leadership and coachingskills
• Effective manager ofchange
• Excellent problem solvingskills
• Competent user of Information Technologyin an office environment
• Confident andaccomplished presenter
