Job summary

Consultant Occupational Physician

Consultant Physician in Occupational Medicine within the UHL Occupational Health Service. The post holder will be expected to work as part of the multidisciplinary OH team across the three main UHL sites and the post will include a fixed commitment at Northampton General Hospital / Kettering General Hospital. Remote working will be supported.

This is a newly created post to allow service growth in OH physician commitments at Northampton General Hospital / Kettering General Hospital.

Providing occupational medical advice to the management and staff of the Trust, other NHS organisations and contracted private customers as appropriate.

Job responsibilities

Providing occupational medical advice to the management and staff of the Trust, other NHS organisations and contracted private customers as appropriate.

Advising managers and staff on:

Suitability for employment and fitness for work

Sickness absence and rehabilitation programmes

Medical retirement

Hazards related to work and risk reduction

Health surveillance

Associated legislative requirements and good practice

Related policies and procedures relevant to OH

Providing clinics on other UHL / OH customer sites when required.

Participating in audit, clinical governance, annual job plan and appraisal.

Professional/ supervision and management of junior medical staff where relevant.

Contribute to supervision and educational development within the OH Team.

Involvement in research is encouraged.

Working with professional colleagues, managers and consulting and liaising with other agencies and specialists such as Microbiology, risk management, local GPs and other treatment providers.

Observing the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and following the local and general policies of the Trust (subject to provisions of the terms and conditions of services).

Ensuring that the Trust and other clients are made aware of the existence, interpretation and application of national and local policies and issues where appropriate.

The post-holder is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose.

The post-holder will be expected to undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency Programmes appropriate to role.

The post-holder will be required to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to successfully revalidate. As per the Trust requirement the successful candidate will be required to have annual appraisal and attend / keep fully up to date with statutory and mandatory training as stipulated.

Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.

To participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department.

Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures

Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD CPD is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory; Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate and compliance with standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust.;

In line with GMC Good Medical Practice it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.

The post-holder is expected to respond in a timely fashion to legitimate requests from Trust officers this might include investigations of incidents or complaints.

The post-holder is expected to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups (see section below).

Qualifications

Essential

oMB BS or Equivalent oFull GMC Registration oFully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date oMFOM/FFOM or equivalent

oMembership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations oHigher degree MSc, MD or equivalent

oFully trained in Occupational Medicine oEvidence of experience in Occupational Medicine in both NHS (or equivalent healthcare) and non NHS organisations oEvidence of ability to make decisions and manage complex clinical problems
