General Description of Position Under the general direction and supervision of the Child Development Center Director, the Assistant Director of the Child Development Center is primarily responsible for assisting the CDC Director in the day-to-day supervision and management of the CDC. The Assistant Director supervises and manages the CDC to ensure high-quality early childhood education and care is provided to all children. Communicates, supervises, and works directly with children, families, group supervisors, assistants, and aides, SCC students, program instructors, outside college staff, and community representatives. This is a full-time regular position.

Essential Functions


Care and Safety of Child Development Center Children
Supervises the care and safety of children in a developmental child care setting which includes but is not limited to the classroom, halls, play areas (indoor and outdoors), and field trips. Monitors/meets child/teacher ratios throughout the Child Development Center. Supervises the maintenance of accurate group attendance and CACFP records. Supervises/monitors/administers to the children when necessary and follows Center policies, prescription, and over-the-counter medications. Administers first aid/CPR if needed. Assists in implementing a health and safety program for the Child Development Center. Guides and directs Child Development Center students, children, and staff in health and safety practices. Implements Child Development Center policies that cover the Child Development Center’s legal responsibilities and liabilities. Prepares accident reports. Arrange for a sound nutrition program. Children’s Program Supervises and coordinates planning, implementation, and evaluation by observation and written criteria for children’s age-level appropriate educational programs, routines, activities, and techniques of child guidance. Assists in the implementation and maintenance of a quality early childhood education program which includes: (a) planning and implementing field trips, (b) providing stimulating bulletin boards, displays, interest centers, etc., © providing for and becoming actively involved in activities concerning indoor and outdoor free play, group activities, meals and snacks, rest, etc., (d) keeping up to date and aware of the developmental stages of children in the Center during assigned work hours, (e) conducting and evaluating by observation and written criteria parent conferences. Evaluate by observation and written criteria the total program with the Director and/or staff. Function as a Member of the Southeast Community College Child Development Center Team Interact with Child Development Center children, parents, colleagues, Child Development Services Program staff and students, and supervisors in a positive, cooperative manner which projects a positive image of the Center and the College. Communicate and cooperate with instructional staff on the performance and progress of program students. Child Development Center Staff Assists staff in preparing daily, weekly, quarterly, and yearly plans. Prepares weekly staff scheduling. Assists the Child Development Center Director in arranging for substitute help as needed, conducting regularly scheduled staff meetings, planning and implementing procedures that lead to wholesome interpersonal relationships with staff members in the Center, orientating new staff members to the Center, recruiting and selecting new staff members, assisting staff in planning individual programs for professional growth and career development, and implementing procedures for meeting with individual staff members to solve problems that may occur. Child Development Program Students and Instructors Facilitates, coordinates, supervises, evaluates by observation and written criteria, and serves as a role model for students enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Program laboratory courses. Reviews and evaluates by observation and written criteria student plans and activities for children. Provide feedback and guidance to students and Early Childhood Education Program instructors. Attends, as assigned, Early Childhood Education Program classes to answer students’ questions about Center positions and expectations. Communicate with and orientate parents of newly enrolled children on Child Development Center policies and procedures. Parents and Community Relationships Assists in administering a parent education and parent involvement program. Conducts parent conferences when assigned. Welcomes visitors to the Child Development Center arranging for the visit to be pleasant, worthwhile, and informative. Assists and cooperates with other departments in the College and where possible integrating the Child Development Center into the total Southeast Community College program. Space and Equipment Schedules the use of shared classroom space and equipment. Reports repair and maintenance needs to the director and Southeast Community College maintenance. Repair minor maintenance needs when possible. Order supplies and equipment. Maintains an environment that is aesthetically clean, neat, attractive, physically safe, and appropriate for developmental child care. Assists and directs students and staff in the location of equipment and supplies. Maintains inventory record of supplies. Maintains security of college equipment and materials. Enrollment and Record Maintenance Maintains enrollment of Child Development Center children at established levels. Maintains enrollment records. Collects, records, and deposits enrollment fees and tuition. Prepares bills, and maintains accounts receivable records. Participates in Child Development and College Meetings and Committees Attends Child Development/College staff meetings and special events as assigned. Serves on committees as assigned. Marginal Functions

Attends Child Development Service Program advisory committee meetings as an ex-official member. Provides information and data in preparing the annual budget. To maintain the quality of the program for all children enrolled in the Child Development Center occasionally assists in performing the essential functions of staff positions in their absence. Occasionally performs re-assigned essential functions due to changes in attendance of children and staff ratios. In the absence of the Director assists in performing essential functions of the Director as needed. Supervises Child Development Center Kitchen and Nutrition Program ensuring successful operation by cross-training in the responsibilities, which may include but are not limited to, day-to-day operation of meal services. Ability to open and close Child Development Center as needed. May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required. Perform other College functions and duties as assigned. Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Extensive knowledge of evidence-based Early Childhood Education practices and philosophies. Ability to supervise and lead to create a positive and motivating Program culture. Knowledge of and ability to supervise and coordinate safe care of children in a group care setting. Knowledge of and ability to supervise and coordinate planning, implementation, and evaluation of children’s age-appropriate educational programs, routines, activities, and techniques of child guidance. Be able to apply and demonstrate effective communication skills, written and verbal. CPR and First Aid Certification. Ability to administer first aid and CPR in emergency situations. Complete 12 clock hours of approved continuing education each Southeast Community College fiscal year in the area of Early Childhood Education and as required by Nebraska State Child Care Licensing standards. Successfully complete annual physical exam and Health Report Form within 30 days of employment as required by Nebraska State Child Care Licensing standards. Cleared successfully through the Nebraska Central Register for Adult and Child Abuse and Neglect, Child Care Fingerprint Criminal History Check both required by Nebraska Child Care Licensing. Cleared through background checks as deemed necessary by Southeast Community College. Food Handlers Permit or obtain within 15 days of hire date. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds in weight frequently and on a daily basis. Ability to endure moderate physical activity during the 8 hours assigned to work. Ability to communicate effectively both in writing, in person, and on the phone. Ability to use basic computer skills. The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. Minimum Qualifications Associate’s degree in Early Childhood, Child Development, Human Development, or Early Childhood Education. One (1) year of experience working with children in a group care setting. One (1) year of supervisory experience. Desired Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood, Child Development, Human Development, or Early Childhood Education.
