Job overview

The Oxfordshire Children's Diabetes Service covers all areas served by the Children's Hospital, Oxford and the Horton Hospital, Banbury. There are approximately children/young people in the service, mostly with Type diabetes. There are an increasing number of CYP with Type diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis Diabetes and other, rarer types. The service has an ethos of continual improvement, research and embracing technological advances in care to provide the best possible outcomes for all CYP. The nursing team are part of a multi-disciplinary team of dietitians, psychologists, consultants, specialty doctors, and support staff who work closely together. The lead nurse role is crucial in being a senior lead for this team and in relationships with the adult diabetes team for smooth transition of services for young people.

An opportunity has arisen for a job share lead role for the nursing team and therefore also the senior management team. This is part of succession planning for the team looking ahead. The successful post candidate for the job share role would be chosen for suitability for the full time lead role in the future.

Main duties of the job

Job Summary:

The post holder will exercise advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care. 

·To lead and develop the specialist nursing service for children and young people (CYP) with diabetes and their families in line with Best Practice Tariff

·To proactively case manage and anticipate the future care needs of people at risk and develop appropriate management plans accordingly.

·To provide advanced clinical skills and advice demonstrating a sound understanding of the issues related to the identification, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of the client group.

·To monitor and lead improvements to standards of care through supervision of practice, clinical audit (including the NPDA), evidence-based practice, quality improvement (QI) programmes, teaching, education and supporting professional colleagues and the provision of skilled professional leadership.

·To lead on the implementation of relevant research into practice contributing to the further development of evidence based research and audit.
To contribute to clinical governance by leading audit and research as part of the MDT within the Paediatric Diabetes Service.

·To develop robust partnerships within primary and secondary care and schools to ensure true integrated care for CYP

Post holders will be expected to participate fully in their personal development and review process.
