Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon

Applications are invited for the position of a Consultant Breast Surgeon with a specialist interest in breast and reconstructive surgery to join a team of 4 consultant Breast surgeons working at West Hertfordshire NHS Trust and will complement the current well-established experienced team of oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgeons.
The successful candidate will also be part of a team of Specialty Doctors and specialist nurses for the provision of one stop outpatient clinics and surgery. This a 6 month, full-time locum post working across two hospital sites, with the future intention to recruit a substantive post starting next year.
The Breast Unit is based at St Albans City Hospital which is specially designed such that the clinics, X-ray department, breast care nurses, and receptionists are located adjacent to each other. Some 70% of breast operations can be done at St Albans City Hospital, which is an elective admission site with protection of beds from emergencies and offers a calmer atmosphere than the acute site at Watford.

Main duties of the job
The appointee will manage all aspects of breast disease in the outpatient setting including running breast clinics for new patients in a one-stop setting as well as results, post-operative and follow-up clinics. Attendance is required at the weekly multidisciplinary meeting. The post will require proficiency in oncoplastic breast surgery including implant-base reconstruction.
The job plan comprises Theatre , Clinic , MDM , Admin 2, SPA = 10PA. The job plan is subject to change according to the Department's and Trust's requirements, if necessary, in the future. The working conditions in this post are equitable to the current consultants.

Job description
Job responsibilities
The Unit is headed by 4 consultant surgeons, 3 consultant oncologists and 4 consultant radiologists, all with a major interest in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease. Our medical staff also includes 1 specialty doctors, 3 registrars, 3 senior house officers and 3 advanced nurse practitioners. The team is supported by 5 breast care nurses, an oncology research nurse and the clinic sister.
The team have weekly multidisciplinary meetings. There are quarterly breast unit educational and governance meetings as well as monthly governance sessions by the general surgery department and division.
The appointee will be expected to contribute to achieving the 18-week patient pathway and Cancer targets, to the introduction of new techniques and service developments in line with demand within the breast, to the running of the breast unit and its representation within the division, to supporting the future development of St Albans City Hospital as a diagnostic centre, to continuing a strong academic profile of the breast unit and the general surgical department and to the training and teaching of trainees and undergraduates and the East of England trainees.
