Outreach Learning Mentor

We are currently recruiting for 1 Outreach Learning Mentor on an 12 month fixed term contract.

AfC Virtual School supports all three Local Authorities and has a dynamic and supportive team, this is an excellent opportunity to work with us to support care experienced children in the Windsor & Maidenhead borough. You will be expected to attend meetings/training etc in Richmond, although you will be supporting our Windsor & Maidenhead children, who are placed in and out of the borough.

You must have a Clean Driving Licence. Travel is an essential part of this role, therefore you must have access to a car or be prepared to travel by public transport when undertaking visits. We support children wherever they are placed in or out of the borough.

About the role

As an Outreach Learning Mentor you will essentially be supporting our care experienced children by providing short term, time bonded educational interventions in the Windsor & Maidenhead borough. You will play a key role in the children’s transition programme from KS2–KS3, KS3-KS4, working alongside Deputy and Assistant Headteachers to improve attendance across AfC Virtual School. 

As an Outreach Learning Mentor you will essentially be:

Committing to achieving education stability for all looked after children. Liaising with parents, carers, social workers, young people, schools and other agencies and services to enhance the support and provision of looked after children. Taking a key role in supporting and monitoring transition for new into care, emergency school moves and natural transitions for looked after children. For example, Year Six into Year 7. Working with other AfC Virtual School staff to support the development and implementation of Personal Education Plans for looked after children. Working proactively with schools to establish alternative strategies to fixed term and permanent exclusions for looked after children.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

Experience of working with children with a range of special educational needs and/or disabilities. Able to work as part of an effective and supportive team. Able to provide a good role model to children and young people maintaining an approachable manner in working with both children and professionals. Able to work with sensitivity and maintain confidentiality when working with carers, sometimes in their homes. Must have a can-do solution focused creative approach, and confident in understanding data. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. Ability to manage competing deadlines in a fast paced working environment.
