Great Yarmouth, United Kingdom Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Locality Medical Director

Salary: 6 Programmed Activities plus allowance is allocated for the Locality MD position plus 4 clinical Programmed Activities to be agreed at appointment.

Location: Central Norfolk, West Norfolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney, East Suffolk and West Suffolk

About Us

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) provides mental health and learning disability care for people across Norfolk and Suffolk. We are dedicated to providing high quality care with compassion, delivering many of the NHS services that are provided outside of hospital and in the community. We have clinical teams providing services in inpatient, community and primary care settings. Our teams currently work in geographic care groups with dedicated local clinical leadership teams. We support a population of just over 1.6 million people and have a dedicated workforce of over 5,000 staff. Our biggest bases are at Hellesdon Hospital, Norwich, Wedgwood House, Bury St Edmunds and Woodlands Unit in Ipswich but our staff are based in more than 50 locations.

We believe in ‘working together for better mental health’. We’re working closely with health and care partners and voluntary sector organisations to transform mental health care to ensure the people of Norfolk and Suffolk get help and support in the right place for them, when they need it, to stay mentally and emotionally well.

The Opportunity

We are looking for exceptional leaders to be appointed as Directors of Operations, Nursing Directors and Medical Directors in the following places: Central Norfolk, West Norfolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney, East Suffolk

Our Future Leadership Structure will see our clinical teams working more closely with partners at place level alongside strengthening clinical and professional leadership. We are also developing a clinical transformation programme alongside our partners to enhance the clinical outcomes our service users experience as well as continuing to improve experience of care.

We are currently consulting with all staff at NSFT about our Future Leadership Structure and for those staff members who have been notified that they are in scope, this is now your opportunity to apply for a role in the new structure.

The Locality Medical Director will be an experienced clinician to show strong leadership and for our new Localities within NSFT. You will demonstrate leadership and be skilled at coaching individuals to enable them to deliver their very best. Working closely with the Locality Director of Operations and Locality Director of Nursing, you will enable locality associate medical directors and their teams and the wider locality to establish themselves as fully functioning service lines.

Working as part of a triumvirate, this post is one of three key leadership roles who will be working together to provide senior strategic, visible, clinical and professional leadership across the Locality. The triumvirate approach represents a very different way of working for managers and clinicians and is one that will demand much from the incumbents of those posts, who are expected to work together to make it a success.

The localities will be required to work collectively and collaboratively to ensure the effective implementation of the Trust locality redesign model, ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of patient and service user pathways across both their respective locality as well as the organisation.

Our Trust has a workforce of over 5,000 hardworking, committed and dedicated staff, but we have struggled for many years to provide the quality of care that we would wish to, and our service users and carers deserve.

There is however much to be proud of with positive signs of improvement. Our CQC rating improved in the most recent inspection report published in February 2023, moving from Inadequate to Requires Improvement and a rating of Good for Caring overall. Despite this, we know we have much more to do. We know that we are at an early stage of our improvement and transformation journey and that whilst this is an indication, we are able to change and improve our services, we still have much more to do. The creation of our five locality groups is a key step towards transforming the way in which we work and provide care to those who need us.

We are looking to appoint individuals who have a passion for our work and a track record of achievement in influencing colleagues and partners to deliver high quality care. We want to appoint inspirational and compassionate leaders who will develop their teams to provide outstanding care.

If you have a reputation for leadership, people development, quality and improvement alongside a passion for improving outcomes with a focus on equity and inclusion to ensure that mental health provision has parity across our partners, then please do consider applying for one of these vital roles. We are determined to create a safer, kinder and better organisation that our service users, families, carers, partner organisations, stakeholders and our staff can be proud of.
