Joining an established multi-disciplinary group of experts within the department of Tropical Disease Biology (TDB), this senior role will encompass carrying out research on the knowledge gaps and needs for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) control and elimination through an integrated fundamental, translational and operational research platform; and play a leadership role in the development, implementation and review of LSTM’s Partnership Strategy

LSTM’s Centre for Tropical Diseases brings together the portfolio of NTD activities across LSTM to promote the basic and applied research that is needed for improved and alternative strategies to accelerate progress in attaining control and elimination targets. The post holder will join the Department of Tropical Disease Biology (TDB) that hosts a vibrant NTD research community that has translational research and partnership at its core, with activity in ‘product discovery and development’, ‘translation of knowledge into practice’ and ‘capacity strengthening’.

Over the past three years, LSTM has been taking stock of its diverse partnership portfolio and developing a forward-looking strategy for sustainable, impactful, equitable partnerships, particularly in Low & Middle Income Countries, to deliver research, education and knowledge exchange.

Once successful in the role, key areas include (but are not limited to):

Research

Work with and lead academics in LSTM and partner organisations in developing cutting edge capacity for NTD research, enabling the development of new knowledge and understanding in NTD Formulate, communicate and deliver a clear vision and strategy for the development of NTD research that is internationally excellent, supporting the sustainability of the LSTM group and partners

Partnership

Work with the Lead on LSTM’s emergent Partnership Strategy (currently Dean of Clinical Sciences & International Public Health) to finalise and begin implementation Liaise at high level with external bodies and participate effectively in complex negotiations, including leading and developing external partnerships and collaborations

Teaching and Learning Support

Take responsibility for the general teaching and learning strategy as applicable to own academic field Lead on innovative curriculum design and development of teaching methodology as applicable to own academic field

External representation/ partnership working & income generation

Generate grant income/initiate opportunities for external funding, with a proven ability to attract significant high prestige funding Liaise at high level with external bodies and participate effectively in complex negotiations, including participation in knowledge exchange activities in line with the UK’s Knowledge Exchange Framework

Leadership & Management

Take leadership role in policy dialogue at regional, national and global levels that help effect change based on reliable research led evidence Effectively lead, manage and mentor a team of senior academic and business support staff, setting standards, monitoring progress & overseeing delegated areas of responsibility

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject area Extensive knowledge of subject area informed by substantial current research in the field Demonstrate an understanding of global factors affecting the discipline and work of LSTM Evidence of established international reputation in academic field Outstanding record of international level peer reviewed original publications and research, including in relation to low or middle-income countries Considerable leadership and management experience, including the effective use of resources and budgetary responsibility and evidence of the capacity to assume further, major leadership roles within and outside LSTM Evidence of strong strategic leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a wide range of staff and collaborators
