Job overview

Develop and manage a transparent counselling service for the Wales Fertility Institute ensuring clinical work and administration are maintained to the highest standard and according to the HFEA Code of Practice.

Integrate current systems to promote patient confidentiality whilst ensuring the clinical team are able to audit and evaluate the service.
Review and develop the current service provision to improve efficacy.
Being responsible for ensuring that the highest level of psychological and emotional support is given to patients as appropriate.


Ensuring that the counselling practice is ethical and professional.
Managing additional counsellors within the team, facilitating peer supervision.

The post holder will work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team within departments, to promote the informed consent of patients and educate staff where necessary about changes in legislation etc.
The role will be based remotely with monthly attendance at both unit sites when needed at the University Hospital of Wales and Neath Port Talbot Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Maintaining own clinical caseload and oversee that of other counsellors in the team.
Ensuring that the service is up to date and professional.
Producing and maintaining protocols and written information within the department for patient and clinical use.
Undertake periodic patient satisfaction surveys and collate, evaluate and present results to the team.
Lead the developing counselling service to meet patient expectations and the changing environment.
Ensure comprehensive record keeping.
Give advice to other team members on referral and treatment issues relating to patients.
Ensure that the counselling service functions within the framework recommended by the HFEA and its Code of Practice.
Liaise with external authorities where appropriate in any assessment process and to provide written reports for reference and discussion.

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria

Qualification in Counselling or Psychology Member if BACP with the ability to work within their guidelines. Member of BICA or Educated to Masters level or equivalent experience.

Desirable criteria

Accredited member of BICA.

Experience

Essential criteria

Post-qualifying experience in being a counsellor Experience of working independently and within a team Experience of working in a hospital setting. Experience of group counselling.

Desirable criteria

Post-qualifying experience in fertility counselling working within a multidisciplinary team in a licensed unit. Experience of all assisted conception procedures, fertility investigations and a wide understanding of the issues involved with the treatment. Experience of having worked in a licensed unit for a period as a counsellor.

Aptitude and abilities

Essential criteria

Adhere to and can demonstrate SBU Values & Behaviours Knowledge of fertility treatments and investigations. Comprehensive understanding of the HFEA and its Code of Practice, with the ability to work within their framework. Have an understanding of the wider ethnical, religious, moral and cultural issues associated with Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART). To be aware of issues and protocols with regard to gametes and embryo storage, use and research. Knowledge of PGD. Full knowledge of current and impending changes of the Law and the HFEA. Understanding issues surrounding adoption and fostering, and the ability to refer couples to appropriate organisations where necessary. Ability to keep updated in changes in the Law and adoption procedures and requirements. Knowledge in advances in psychology for adopting into best practice. Knowledge in changes in the field both nationally and internationally with regard to the provision of gamete donation. Ability to understand and disseminate relevant wide spread information to patients and other members of the team. Ability to work independently and autonomously within a multidisciplinary team. Knowledge of gamete donation and availability of treatment in the UK and overseas.

Desirable criteria

Welsh Speaker (Level 1) Ability to travel across unit sites within the health board.
