We’ve got an exciting opportunity for a Ranger to join one of our teams on the South Downs.
As a Ranger, you’re the heart and soul of the National Trust in the landscapes we protect. You’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.
This is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 12 months.
What it's like to work here
The South Downs Central ranger team are based in the historic Slindon Estate Yard, near Arundel. The team cover over 2000 hectares of beautiful woodland, heathland, downland, sand dunes, salt marsh and mixed agricultural land, split between the South Downs National Park and Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Reporting to the Area Ranger for East Head, Sullington Warren and Warren Hill, you’ll be part of a team that includes a Lead Ranger, 2 Area Rangers, and 2 other Rangers.
What you'll be doing
Your position will focus on East Head in Chichester harbour and Sullington Warren and Warren Hill near Storrington. You’ll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery. You’ll pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love this area as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions.
You’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard. You’ll build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the Trust and talking to people about the work you and the team are doing.
You’ll be working some weekends, bank holidays and evenings, and be on call on a rota basis.

Who we're looking for
We’d love to hear from you if you’re:
practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters hard-working and willing to learn able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates a driver with a full UK driving licence
