An exciting opportunity has arisen atSunderland Eye Infirmary (SEI), for a Band 7 Registered Adult Nurse as an EyeEmergency Clinical Practitioner ( per week). This busy ophthalmic EmergencyDepartment offers a 24/7-day service where staff work on a rota basis to ensurethe needs of the service are met. The team ensures the delivery of a fast,high-quality service to patients attending ED with a variety of ophthalmicconditions. The successful candidate will need to have extensive postregistration clinical experience relevant to the role. We are also excited tooffer this position as a developmental post for the right candidate, this wouldbe as a trainee Clinical practitioner in a band 6 role until training is fullycompleted.

Main duties of the job

You will work as an autonomous practitioner, making clinical decisionsrelevant to patient care and treatment/management plan and will need to prioritise your workloadto ensure patients receive care within an appropriate time frame. You will alsoneed to be able to deal with conflict and challenging behaviour in a calmpractical manner.

It is expected that thepost holder will provide SEI senior nurse site cover when on duty in theabsence of the Matron and participate in the night duty on call rota and will work a variety of shiftpatterns and public holidays to ensure 24/7 service provision.

Thesuccessful candidate will have the exciting opportunity in the future to work in the purpose-built in the new state-of-the-art Sunderland Eye Hospitalsituated in Sunderland city centre which is expected to open in 2026.

Job responsibilities

To coordinate the delivery and development of the specialist service using effective evidence-based practice in line with agreed national standards for patient safety and monitoring. To contribute to the organisation of multidisciplinary, patient centred care. To be accountable for the planning and delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate patient care in relation to dedicated pathways of care, working as an autonomous practitioner within the specialism. To provide specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the assessment, management, and care of patients within the specialist area. To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework. To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC code To ensure effective communication internally and externally regarding patient care and resources. Provide education and training to clinical staff across the Trust. Provide expert specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the management and care of patients within the specialist area. To provide direct access for patients, either face to face or telephone consultation To represent the service nationwide. To play a key role in ensuring that national and local standards/targets for specialist area are met. To manage/lead nurse led clinics in relation to reviewing patients and play a key role in optimising complex treatment regimes, facilitating hospital discharge and preventing avoidable hospital admissions. Clinical teaching experience. Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive, or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required. Able to work without supervision. Competent in the use of IT packages. Proven interpersonal skills. Evidence of competency in relation to clinical practices appropriate to the post.

Qualifications

Essential

1st Level Registered Nurse Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree. Mentorship certificate or Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience. Clinical skills accreditation. Non-medical prescribing or evidence of currently working towards.

Leadership and Management course. Qualification in specialty.
