Washington, United Kingdom Northumbrian Water Full time

About the role

Do you care about your local environment and want to help make the rivers and beaches of the Northeast the best in the country? If so we have an exciting opportunity to join the Wastewater Performance team as a Technical Support Advisor, to support us in the delivery of our misconnections programme.

Although generally misconnections are unintentional, there are hundreds of thousands of facilities such as toilets, sinks, or washing machines that are incorrectly connected into drains, that are intended to only receive clean rainwater. When wastewater is connected to a surface water drain, it's called a misconnection. From a misconnected kitchen sink, you're pouring food waste, fats/oils/greases as well as bleaches, detergents and washing liquids straight into the environment, and the aim of our team is to reduce these discharges and protect our rivers and beaches.

The role involves onsite technical investigations, accurate evidence gathering, report writing, including the team scorecard, coordinating, and resourcing field crews, and supporting the ongoing development of the Misconnections process.

You’ll be self-motivated and able to prioritise a demanding workload to ensure site visits are carried out in a timely manner, and follow up communications and visits are fulfilled. You will be collecting evidence on site to identify the source of issues impacting the network. You will liaise closely with our Technical Support teams to provide updates on successes and areas of risk, and also with external stakeholders including local authorities and the Environment Agency to persuade and influence positive change.

The successful candidate will work with customers and stakeholders to reduce pollution and improving water quality at our surface water outfalls by removing all foul water discharges to the environment caused by misconnected drainage, and helping operational departments with the preparation of reports to meet internal and external (regulatory) deadlines.

About you

We’d really like to hear from you if you are genuinely committed to improving our environmental performance.

We’re looking for the successful candidate to have the knowledge and experience of sewerage networks, along with excellent customer service skills. Knowledge and understanding of regulatory frameworks is desirable but not essential, and you should have experience of Quality, Environmental and Health and Safety procedures.

You’ll have proven experience of being a strong team player, involving and supporting others in problem-solving and decision-making processes, along with effective relationship management and networking ability (across all areas of the business and with external stakeholders).

We’re looking for you to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with highly developed literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills. You will be motivated to embrace innovation and to look for and highlight potential improvements in ways of working.

The role requires a full and valid driving licence with the ability to travel around the Northumbrian Water region and the use of your own vehicle.

Here at Northumbrian Water/Essex & Suffolk Water, we embrace and value Diversity, Inclusion and Equity, and encourage all colleagues to bring their most authentic self to work.

Our colleague network groups include our Rainbow Support Network (LGBTQIA+), REACH (Race, Ethnicity, and Cultural Heritage), WiSTEM (Women in STEM) and Thisability (disability and neurodiversity) networks. They provide a safe space for colleagues from diverse backgrounds, welcoming all colleagues regardless of their personal characteristics to participate in valuable conversation that improves our organisational awareness, understanding and inclusivity.

We encourage and welcome all applications, as we strive to be an equal opportunity employer, committed to having diverse communities represented within all our teams, structures, and organisation.
