Job summary

We are looking for a Health Care Assistant to join our friendly team at Whitstable Medical Practice.

We have a part-time position available for our expanding medical practice.

The role will be 25 or more hours per week (to be discussed at interview stage) and you will be required to work at all three sites: Estuary View Medical Practice, Chestfield Medical Centre and Whitstable Health Centre.

Main duties of the job

To work as a team member undersupervision of the Treatment Room nurses to provide and maintain an optimumlevel of care for our patients.

There are 26 equity partners and 6 salaried GPs looking after over 43,500 patients. We pride ourselves on our innovative approach to Primary Care. We are a training practice and run various in house contracts including Cataract surgery, Ultrasound, Dermatology, Physical Therapies and Audiology together with further community contracts, a Day Surgery Suite and an Urgent Treatment Centre with digital x-ray.

Responsibilities

TakingBlood Samples from Patients (Phlebotomy)

Check vaccine refrigerators daily and recordtemperature.

Unlocking treatment room cupboards and ensuringall equipment is set up for the day

Fill the hand-held liquid nitrogen as needed.

Filing of patient information and enteringresults of Blood Pressures, Urinalysis etc on the Computer.

Re-stock and check the Doctors rooms as needed.

Keep all cupboards and trolleys well stocked andtidy.

Be familiar with Treatment Room protocols andtake part in their regular updating.

Unpacking deliveries of stock.

Check prescriptions daily against treatment roombook

Answering phone and dealing with queries, liaisewith nursing staff

Clinical Care

Work alongside the clinicians in the provisionof patient care.

Undertake and record a range of tasks, which mayinclude:

a) Measurement of height and weight

b) Urinalysis

c) Measurement of blood pressure, temperature andpulse

d) Peak flow measurements

e) Recording of ECGs / 24 hour BPs / 24 hourECGs/ 7 day ECGs

f) Phlebotomy

g) Assisting with leg ulcer clinics / simpledressings

h) Assisting with Family Planning Clinics

i) Assisting with Dermatology Clinics

j) Assist nurses in INR clinics and doctors inMinor Op clinics

Undertake health checks

Providesmoking cessation support for patients

Undertakedementia screening

Recognise changes in the patients observations,which must be reported and acted on.

Assist clinicians in emergency management ofpatients.

Enable patients to access appropriateprofessionals in the practice team.

Act as a chaperone.

Provide relevant health promotion literature forpatients.

Other duties as per nurses and doctorsinstructions as dictated by changes in the nature of Whitstable MedicalPractice.

Skills and Abilities

Essential

Excellent assessment skills. Good decision making, communication and organisational skills. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with people at all levels. Good IT skills to enable accurate recording of consultations. Committed to ongoing development. Adaptable and flexible to work additional hours including extended access hours. Ability to work under pressure. A team player. Enthusiasm and energy.

Qualifications

Essential

Minimum Grade C/4 GCSE or equivalent in English Language and Maths.

Desirable

Healthcare qualification/certificate

Experience

Essential

Experience of working as a Health Care Assistant or experience within a Healthcare/ health environment. Phlebotomy Trained.

Desirable

Wound Care Trained. Knowledge of EMIS.
