Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic Midwifery support worker to support the smoke free team to help women / pregnant people to give up smoking during pregnancy.

You will need to be motivated and work well in a team and independently. Good IT and communication skills are essential and full training will be given. The support you will provide will be both in the community and within the hospital setting, therefore you will need to be adaptable.

The role is currently fixed term/secondment until 31/12/2024, full time and part time hours available.

You will work under the guidance of a midwife, mainly in the Colchester area.

Main duties of the job

To work with the smoking cessation midwife and midwifery teams in the delivery of safe individualised smoking cessation support and health advice concerning mothers, their babies and their families within the community and hospital setting in a flexible innovative way. Provide appropriate information to pregnant women and their families about the benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy and give support to those women and families wanting to quit. Work under the direction of the midwives to plan, organise and prioritise smoking cessation support for women and babies, to promote smoke free homes and support and advise women and families about passive smoking, with minimal indirect supervision operating within the assessed level of competence and being accountable for all aspects of own work. To carry out a defined range of duties to support smoke free pregnancies including using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring, and Nicotine Replacement therapy and public health messages involving direct care as directed by midwifery staff. Undertake relevant training to achieve smoking cessation competencies to undertake the role and maintain the skills and knowledge as necessary through participation in continuous development. Deliver Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring to a high standard and engage in the collection and collation of CO rates in pregnancy and post-partum.
