As part of the Treating Tobacco Dependency Programme we are increasing the support we offer to people who are admitted to, or attend our Hospitals and community based services, to help them to stop smoking and be smoke free during an inpatient admission (temporary abstinence). The programme will also provide more support to staff who wish to quit and help us to have smoke free hospitals and grounds.
The Programme recognizes smoking as an addiction (tobacco dependency) and that it is a chronic relapsing clinical condition that prematurely kills at least half of the people who smoke. Smoking is seen as a medical condition that can be treated rather than it being a lifestyle choice.
**Specifically the post holder will**:
- Provide 1:1 behavioural support and advice for smokers who wish to quit and to support temporary abstinence during a hospital admission.
- Promote the general health and wellbeing of people who use the service through offering healthy lifestyle advice and support.
- Work with patients and staff to change their behaviour to improve their health.
- Act as a smoke free champion promoting the smoke free message through their day-to-day work.
- Provide advice and support to ward staff, including reinforcing the training provided to inpatient teams about the Programme, smoking cessation and Smoke Free Sites.
- Ensure seamless transition to our Community Tobacco Dependency Advisor following discharge.
- Signpost and refer to other community harm-reduction services such as alcohol care teams or weight management programmes.

What is Staff Bank?
Our EPUT NHS staff bank is an entity managed by the trust that hires clinical and non-clinical healthcare professionals to take on shifts at our trust hospitals and community settings. Here at EPUT we maintain our own bank of specialist staff to ensure that we are able offer safe and effective care at all times.
All our permanent staff are automatically enrolled onto the staff bank however this does not mean you have to work any additional shifts, but the option is there for you if you wish.
If you are joining our Trust in a fixed term role, please indicate on your New Starter Paperwork that you wish to join our staff bank.
The following framework is designed to illustrate the priorities given to the additional key activities associated with the role when delivering these normal day-to-day activities.
- Complete Mandatory Training in line with the Trust Policy
- Receive annual appraisal
- Training relevant to role
- Take all allocated annual leave
- Receive management supervision and provide management supervision where appropriate
- Comply with the CPD, practice hours and revalidation process requirements set out by Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC - This is the essential requirement for yearly registration).
- Receive clinical supervision and deliver clinical supervision to lower banded staff in accordance with Trust policy
- Attend regular key Trust-wide meetings / forums i.e. Professional nurse advisory committee, nurse forum, Link nurse forum (Infection control)
- Attend additional in-house developmental training, and support delivery of a number of mandatory training e.g. STORM, TASI, Infection Control, Safeguarding
- Participate in audit and research
Clinical duties
Deliver tobacco harm reduction (smoking cessation) assessments, advice and support interventions, which will include advice on stop smoking medications and e-cigarettes, working within recommended protocols and guidelines. This will involve face to face sessions in a variety of inpatient wards.
Develop individually tailored support plans including treatment recommendations based on assessed needs.
Provide information to people about stopping smoking, minimizing harm from tobacco and health-related issues in line with guidance and protocols.
Provide general health and lifestyle advice and support to people using the service e.g. healthy eating, physical activity, stress management. This will include individual and group based interventions, signposting and referring to other health, community and voluntary services.
Responsibility for the delivery of tobacco harm reduction and stop smoking support a range of client groups (e.g. inpatients, relatives/carers of people who have been admitted and staff).
Provide advice and support to all staff groups on smoking cessation and accessing the Programme.
Ensure robust discharge planning for the patient’s ongoing specialist tobacco
