Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist - Paediatrics

Band 8a 12 months FTC

Cross site - Chelsea and Westminster Hospital / West Middlesex Hospital

Due to a career break of the existing post holder, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced speech and language therapist to lead the paediatric service at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust. This role will provide leadership and management of the service across the two hospital sites and will include management of paediatric and neonatal inpatient caseloads and a small outpatient caseload. There will be opportunity to work in the videofluoroscopy clinic and implement QI projects as necessary.

You will need to have expert knowledge and experience of inpatient infant and paediatric dysphagia assessment and management, and experience of providing an acute inpatient communication service as indicated. The post holder will provide line management to the B7 and will work with the divisional therapy lead to ensure the service runs as efficiently and effectively as possible. The paediatric speech therapy team is a small friendly team, with excellent working relationships with the MDT. Please get in touch to find out more.

Main duties of the job

To work as a clinical expert in the management of infants, children and young people in the paediatric speech and language therapy service. To provide clinical, operational management and leadership for the paediatric speech therapy team. To be responsible for the day-to-day planning, coordination, delivery, evaluation and support of the acute paediatric speech therapy service across both hospital sites. To work as an autonomous practitioner in providing expert assessment, diagnosis and management for infants, children and young people referred to the service and supervise team members accordingly. To work as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team providing holistic service to the child and their family/carer. To ensure the service is responsive to user requirements within available resources and in accordance with directorate and departmental plans.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To be a clinical expert in the field of acute paediatric and neonatal dysphagia, assessment and management, providing high standard and autonomous specialist assessment, differential diagnosis, advice, goal setting, therapeutic intervention and discharge planning within the role of speech and language therapy.

To use advanced clinical assessment, clinical reasoning skills and evidence-based knowledge to assess infants, children and young people with highly complex conditions and to formulate prognoses and recommendations for best form of clinical management.

To have expert skills in the areas of acute complex paediatric dysphagia management, high-risk infants, children and young people, including development of feeding and swallowing in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.

To have expert skills in managing infants, children and young people with respiratory, gastro-surgical, ENT, and neurological conditions.

To analyse and interpret clinical and non-clinical facts which may be conflicting, and to provide expert advice and second opinion to the MDT, including peers and consultants, and external organisations.

To maintain knowledge and application of national and Trust clinical guidelines and evidence base practice within paediatric speech and language therapy to support clinical management of caseload.

To make appropriate referrals to other services and clinicians based on assessment and investigation findings, and by having an in-depth understanding of the role of others in the multidisciplinary team.
