This postis based at Imperial College, South Kensington Campus and is specifically to assist in carrying out experiments related to Professor Mohamed Shamji’s researchfocused on the investigation of immunological mechanisms of tolerance induction following AIT in allergic diseases.

The post-holder will provide technical support to Professor Mohamed Shamji’s group within Allergy and Clinical Immunology in the division of Inflammation, Repair & Development. The post-holder will be involved in multiple projects, including the main role in supporting a clinical trial running within the group (in collaboration with Professor Stephen Durham, Allergy and Clinical Immunology, NHLI). Experience in running biomarker assays in the context of allergy research, previous experience in aseptic technique and cell culture, flow cytometry staining would be advantageous. The ability to work independently and as part of a team, excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills are essential. Under the overall direction and supervision of the line manager, you will apply and extend your knowledge of relevant laboratory techniques. In addition to providing technical support, the duties include laboratory administrative responsibilities.


Under the direction of the line manager, you will be involved in:

Planning and executing experiments using the following techniques: Cell separationCell CultureFACS analysisELISADNA/RNA extraction and quantification The collection, preparation, processing and storage of samplesIsolation, culturing and experimentation with primary cellsMaintenance of cell line cultures and purifying primary cells

The role will also involve other duties that include:

General laboratory administrative duties including orderingMaintaining stocks of cell lines, virus and routine suppliesDocumentation and analysis of experimental dataParticipation in local laboratory meetingsAssisting to make sure good laboratory practice is in placeAssist with presentation of results to the group, collaborators, and to the research community in generalAssist with preparation of grant reports and scientific publications To help maintain a highly efficient working laboratoryTo undertake any necessary training as required

The ideal candidate should fulfil the following requirements:

Hold a Master’s degree (MSc or MRes) in life sciences or equivalent relevant laboratory based experienceExperience in laboratory-based researchPractical experience with working with peripheral bloodExperience in collection, preparation, processing and/or storage of samplesComputer literacy using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPointMethodical approach and close attention to detailAbility to work with limited supervision and keep meticulous recordsAbility to prioritise own work in response to deadlinesAbility to work as part of a teamFlexible approach to working hours according to the requirements of the technical proceduresBe prepared to have an active involvement with daily running and functioning of the laboratory.Discipline and regard for confidentiality and security at all times.Flexible approach to working hours according to the requirements of the technical procedures.

This position is a full-time (35h/pw) position on a fixed-term basis until 31st January 2025.
