Main duties of the job

UHS Mortuary department has an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified anatomical pathology technician (APT) to join our established team of technicians and support staff at all grades.

UHS mortuary delivers a comprehensive range of mortuary and post mortem services to the Trust and HM Coroner's service in Hampshire, including specialist neuropathology, high-risk infectious post mortems as well as the supra-regional paediatric post mortem service. UHS mortuary is a busy department, receiving over 3000 patients and conducting over 1000 adult and 250 paediatric post mortems a year.

Core working hours are 0730-1700 Monday to Friday, and the department operates a 24/7 out-of-hours technical on call service.

Praised at our latest HTA inspection for our high standard of working practices, positive staff and culture, UHS mortuary is modern, well-equipped and highly secure, with dedicated adult, paediatric & high-risk post mortem facilities.

Job responsibilities

What youll do

The post holder will contribute to all aspects of the daily workload, rotating around all areas of the department as required to assist in the delivery of the full range of technical and administrative services offered.

Following completion of a comprehensive local induction & supported training plan, the post holder will be able to perform all patient management processes, including admission, storage, viewings & release of patients & the completion of associated documentation, in accordance with HTA licensing standards. The post holder will also perform the whole range of routine and specialist adult and paediatric post mortem procedures unsupervised.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the 24/7 technical on-call service on a rostered basis.

This post is an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified APT to broaden their knowledge and skills in advanced and specialist autopsy techniques, including paediatric (forensic, coroners and hospital) and high-risk infectious post mortem procedures. The successful candidate would be actively supported in their continuing professional development (CPD).

Part of a specialist teaching hospital, the department supports the training of a diverse range of healthcare professionals, including APTs, consultant pathologists, medical students and biomedical & clinical scientists.

UHS mortuary department continuously seeks opportunities to develop our service and we actively encourage the suggestions & involvement of all staff in all improvement projects. We collaborate widely with a range of other teams and staff groups within the Trust to improve the experience of our service users and raise the profile of mortuary services and the importance of care after death. We also support research and development and have close links with the University of Southampton faculties of Medicine and Life Sciences.

What were looking forApplications are invited from candidates holding the L3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology with experience in routine and specialist post mortem techniques, who are enthusiastic about learning and embrace positive are looking for a highly motivated, flexible & resilient individual, who values & works well within a team environment. You must be capable of working effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced and dynamic mortuary environment, whilst prioritising the care & dignity of the deceased. High attention to detail and organisational skills are a must, and you must be able to communicate compassionately and professionally when interacting with bereaved relatives and a diverse range of service users.

Qualifications / training required

Essential

GCSE level A* to C (or equivalent) in Maths, English and at least one Science subject or equivalent RSfPH Level 3 Diploma (or Certificate pre-2014) in Anatomical Pathology Technology Technical and scientific knowledge of mortuary and post mortem procedures Computer literate with good keyboard skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite

Desirable

Knowledge of medical terminology Knowledge of human anatomy and pathology Evidence of continuing professional development

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential

Practical experience of mortuary operations, particularly in a busy acute hospital/NHS mortuary environment. Experience and technical competence in routine post mortem procedures, including evisceration, tissue sampling and reconstruction techniques

Desirable

Previous experience of specialist autopsy & post- mortem techniques, namely paediatric, forensic or high-risk (infectious) post-mortem procedures Knowledge and experience of the practical application of HTA Codes of Practice, licensing standards and regulations relevant to mortuary & post mortem services Knowledge of current national guidelines in mortuary practice Previous experience of NHS or other healthcare software and hospital/clinical IT systems Knowledge of the law relating to management of the deceased, the relevant legal authorities, requirements & documentation and their application in a mortuary setting Previous experience of QPulse or other quality management software
