The Role

We are seeking to appoint a talented and enthusiastic researcher with experience in Li-ion battery cathode materials characterisations and cell fabrication to join our group working on an Innovate UK funded project. The project will focus on working with industrial partners in UK and Singapore to support their refining, recycling, and production processes to produce Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt oxide as Li-ion battery cathode materials.

You will be working closely with industrial partners supporting the development of the production process by characterising, testing, and evaluating recycled materials and products at seperate stages of the manufacturing process. You will also be testing the produced cathode materials in coin and pouch cells and provide training to industrial collaborators when required.

The project is spearheaded by the School of Engineering at Newcastle University, proud hosts of the upcoming . Our accomplished academics have played pivotal roles in numerous battery research initiatives, including Faraday Institution-funded projects like ReLIB, Degradation, and SafeBatt, as well as UKRI and Innovate UK-funded projects. The Electrochemical Engineering Group is recognised as world leading with expertise focusing on electrochemical energy conversion and storage. Prof. Mohamed Mamlouk has long track record and international standing in Electrochemical energy conversion and storage research. Dr Stevin Pramana is a lecturer in Chemical Engineering with strong experience in physical-chemical materials characterisations. Dr Chuan Cheng is a lecturer in Mechanical engineering with expertise in battery manufacturing.

You will be part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary international team collaborating with industrial partners across Singapore and the UK to tackle the exciting challenge of recycling and reusing Li-ion battery materials. This role offers the chance to travel, meet partner institutes, and access state-of-the-art facilities. You'll be working alongside a diverse research group and PhD students at Newcastle who are engaged in various groundbreaking battery research projects.

This is a fixed-term position available immediately for an initial period to 30th June 2026, with the potential for extension.

Appointment is subject to Occupational Health Pre-Placement check. You will be contacted by our Occupational Health team to arrange Hazardous chemicals & biological agents check.
