Job summary

The opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 highly specialisedPhysiotherapist to join our large and dynamic team at county Durham andDarlington NHS Trust (CDDFT).

Childrens physiotherapy within CDDFT is divided into threeareas, community, special schools and outpatients. This post will be to lead the outpatients team for the county, along with a anotherTeam Lead.

The post holder will be responsible for developing andleading the out patients team for CDDFT.They will work closely with the other the other team leads to ensure bestcare for patients and service users.

This post is suited to a therapist who is innovative, drivenand who wants to improve the lives and outcomes of children and young people.

It is essential to have a numberof years extensive pediatrics experience as a specialist.

Main duties of the job

1. To lead the outpatientsteam lead with fellow outpatient lead

2. Maintain clinical caseload of highly complex children andyoung people, working as an autonomous practitioner.

3. Provide frequent clinical supervision and training to thewider team.

4. To be responsible for organising and prioritising own andothers workload across the service.

5. Lead and develop innovative therapy services.

6. Deputise for the operational lead whennecessary

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspectsof caseload including management, treatment and care delivered to children andyoung people.

Manage the therapeutic treatment of children with a range ofconditions, including children with profound and multiple difficulties.

To assess, diagnose, review and develop individual care andtreatment plans for children with a wide range of paediatric conditions.

To provide specialist advice and recommendations and advicestaff where required.

Analyse and understand impact on child and therapy treatmentof various care plans/diagnosis.

Be responsible for maintaining a high standard of clinicalpractice both for self and members of the team.

Motivate and persuade children of all ages, with a range ofcomplex conditions/disabilities to work with treatment programmes and worktowards treatment goals.

To be actively involved in planning, monitoring andimplementing clinical service policies and care pathways. To be an activemember of the multi-disciplinary team and Participate in specific projects asdirected and agreed and supported by the operational lead.

To work with the Operational lead physiotherapist forchildrens services to develop strategic and operational management of thephysiotherapy service as required.

To understand and apply National Guidelines and Legislationrelating to Health, Education and SocialCare in Physiotherapy practice.

To assess children for specialist equipment in the home andschool, and recommend its purchase to relevant agencies. To be responsible for the safe and competentuse of all equipment, appliances and aids used by children, and ensure thatrotational staff/assistants are competent in their use.

To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance,including ability to audit own practice.

Proposes changes in own working and clinical practices.Ensure that where this impacts on the work of other health professionals orservices they are informed and assisted with managing the changes.

Maintain comprehensive contemporaneous clinical andstatistical records in line with professional and service standards.

Provide formal reports for Statutory Assessment of SpecialEducational Needs and ongoing EHCP requirements for children with Statement ofSpecial Educational Needs.

Professional

To work to standards set by professional bodies and nationalstandards eg. for Children.

To be responsible for maintaining own continuousprofessional development, evidence by attendance at relevant specialist levelcourses, maintaining a professional portfolio including reflective practice andachievement of appraisal objectives.

To advise the dept. on best practice for the specialty areaand to support clinical pathways in line with most up to date Evidence basedpractice and NICE guidance.

To develop new initiatives in partnership with service usersand networks on a needs led basis and within financial and resources available.

To facilitate a continuous programme of quality assuranceand improvement audits outcome measures to ensure quality standards.

To cascade knowledge and skills within the therapy team andthe wider therapy/ multi-disciplinary team using a range of formal and informalteaching and presentation techniques.

To keep updated on new treatments in children'sphysiotherapy in response to changes in clinical practice and teach staffthrough in service training and provide peer and clinical supervision.

To be actively involved in the education and appraisal ofother staff, students up to graduate level, band 5/6 run through training andpost graduate training for therapy staff.

To be actively involved in professional clinical groups iepaediatric special interest groups, peer review groups and other professionaldevelopment activities.

Organisational

To triage referrals appropriately.

To balance clinical and non clinical duties to meet servicedemands and professional development needs and provide leadership andorganisational structure to the staff.

To collect and collate accurate and timely informationrelating to service activity and audit.

Deputise for the operational Lead in their absence, takingresponsibility for the daily operational management of the team, allocating andorganising the work of team to meet service priorities.

Managerial

To attend relevant meetings and provide leadership forchildrens physiotherapy

To be involved in Physiotherapy audit and serviceimprovement and staff appraisal and competencies.

To lead the education and training of studentsand staff.
