Thedepartment of paediatric neurosciences provides services to the children ofWest, East and North Yorkshire together with NE Lincolnshire, serving apopulation of 1 million children from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Inpatientservices are based at the Leeds Childrens Hospital within a dedicatedpaediatric neurosciences unit, where children are jointly cared for bypaediatric neurologists and neurosurgeons. There are strong links with allother paediatric subspecialties co-located in the Childrens Hospital includingthe regional neonatal and paediatric intensive care units.

Main duties of the job

Inpatient

Supportinpatients under the paediatric neuroscience teams (neurology andneurosurgery).

Reviewof acute consultations in Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units, generalpaediatric and other co-located specialities.

Attendanceand participation at departmental MDTs.

Organisationand follow-up of inpatient and outpatient investigations.

Oncall cover

Asa senior trainee the post holder would be expected to hold the hospital arrestbleep as per rota.

Outof hour cover either general paediatric assessment unit or inpatients(including paediatric diabetes, rheumatology, endocrinology) or paediatricspecialities (Neurosciences, Hepatology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Oncology& Haematology).

Outpatient

Undertakeoutpatient clinics along-side a supervising Consultant Paediatric Neurologistwith appropriate supervision and admin support.

Governance

Participationand attendance in departmental governance meetings and programme.

Teaching

Participationand attendance at the departmental rolling teaching programme.

Deliveringteaching sessions to the hospital lower speciality teaching programme.

Thisis an exciting opportunity to gain experience in an establishedmultidisciplinary team comprising of over 20 specialist colleagues acrossphysiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychology, speech and language therapy,neuropsychology, specialist nurses and a trauma and rehabilitation coordinator.

Thereare 6 Consultant Paediatric Neurologists (Dr Anne-Marie Childs, Dr KarenPysden, Dr Helen McCullagh, Dr Lydia Green, Dr Munni Ray and Dr MichealTaylor), Dr Cristina Martos-Lozano a Consultant Paediatrician with expertise inPaediatric Neuromuscular disorders and 4 Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeons(Mr John Goodden, Mr Atul Tyagi, Mr Gnanamurthy Sivakumar and Ms RebeccaChave-Cox).

Thepaediatric neuroscience team benefit from the support of neuroradiology,neurophysiology, neuropathology and genetics services.

CLINICALFELLOW IN PAEDIATRIC NEUROLOGY

1.BACKGROUND

Thepost is for a Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Neurology and is particularlysuited to someone hoping to gain more neurology experience prior to enteringspeciality training and considering some out of programme experience. The postwill be based at Leeds Childrens Hospital.

2.OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

Inpatientactivity

Thepostholder will support the inpatient need of patients under the paediatricneurosciences teams (neurology and neurosurgery). We are a busy tertiary neurosciencesunit embedded within a large childrens hospital with a Paediatric IntensiveCare Unit ensuring the postholder will gain experience in a wide-range ofneurological disorders.

Thepostholder will actively contribute and attend the neuroscience meetingsincluding: neuro-oncology; neuroradiology; histopathology, neurophysiologyand neurogenetics meeting.

Outpatientactivity:

Wewould anticipate that the post holder to attend regular outpatient clinics.Clinics include: General Neurology; Epilepsy (including VNS, Ketogenic Diet andDravet Syndrome Clinics); Neuromuscular; Inherited White Matter Disorders;Neuroinflammatory; Tuberous Sclerosis; Neurovascular and Complex MovementDisorder.

Teaching

Thepost holder will have the opportunity to become involved with departmental,hospital and regional teaching programmes.

Research

TheLeeds Paediatric neurology team have an active research portfolio.

Theneuromuscular service is recognised as one of the national centres of clinicalexcellence for childrens neuromuscular care in the UK. We have expanded ourresearch portfolio and are a well-established Research Hub site outside thenational research centres. Leeds is a centre for a number of observational andinterventional studies in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Spinal MuscularAtrophy.

Thepaediatric epilepsy team are also currently expanding their research portfolioand the successful applicant will be expected to take part in research clinicsand activities across these services.

Thepostholder will also support the research activity within the paediatricneurology service.

Thiswill offer the opportunity to be able to develop their understanding ofresearch methodology and be involved in preparation and submission ofmanuscripts for peer-reviewed journals. Support will be provided to assist withfor projects/publications/ presentations.

Governance:

Thepostholder will participate in departmental governance activities, includingaudit, service evaluation and risk management

Oncall:

Outof hours cover will be for the general paediatric or speciality rota.

Thepost is for a 12 month period and is available from September 2024

3.REQUIREMENTSOF THE POST

General Training and Qualifications

Experience

The successful applicant should be able towork at ST4-7 level or to be able to demonstrate equivalent level experience.

Thesuccessful applicant will have both inpatient and outpatient duties

Theywill need to be confident in the assessment of sick children

Theywill need experience of working in a multidisciplinary team and have excellentverbal and written communication skills

Theywill need knowledge of the impact of chronic life limiting disorders and beprepared to develop their expertise and understanding of neuromusculardisorders and paediatric epilepsy.

Theywill need to have a good understanding of research methodology and be able tosupervise and support clinical assessments as part of a research study. Theywill need to have, or be prepared to undertake, good clinical practice (GCP)training.

Experiencein paediatric neurology and with managing children with paediatric epilepsy isdesirable.
