This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Psychologist to lead the psychology service within our Critical Care Unit at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

You will be assessing and supporting the psychological needs of our critically unwell patients whilst they are on the unit and following them up post-discharge through outpatient clinics.

You will be responsible for clinically supervising and supporting the development of our junior psychology staff. You will also be part of a close multidisciplinary team, providing psychological advice and support where required.

You will be an experienced Clinical or Health Psychologist with a good understanding of the impact of critical illness on patients and the resulting difficulties, including PTSD.

You will be able to work effectively as part of our MDT on the Critical Care Unit along with Nurses, Doctors, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and Dietitians.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the delivery of a high quality service to patients, their families and colleagues. This will be achieved by contributing to the systematic provision of specialist psychological input to patients and their families whilst on the Unit and following their discharge as required. This will be in consultation and collaboration with the Psychology Lead, Clinical Director, Service Leads, clinical colleagues and key stakeholders in the service.

The post holder is to provide consultation, supervision and joint working with colleagues within the MDT and will support the training and development needs of junior psychology staff members.

The post is 0.6WTE and the post holder must be able to cover the weekly MDT meetings, currently held on Wednesdays.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the provision of high quality psychological assessment and interventions. Consultation, psychological advice and formulation will be provided to colleagues within the service, patients, families and other relevant parties as required.

Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria
  • Senior Qualification experience
  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or equivalent) as accredited by the HCPC, including specifically models of psychopathology.

  • Ability to supervise others
  • Ability to develop/deliver training & consultation
  • Leadership qualities of understanding/employing mechanisms of governance
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate

  • Lived experience and/or evidenced compassion and understanding
  • Experience of working within a multicultural framework
Skills Essential criteria
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention, and management
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non -professional groups
  • Ability to plan and prioritise own clinical workload and research programmes
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies with individuals with physical health problems.
  • High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health.
  • Experience with trauma focused care and trained to deliver trauma treatments
Experience Essential criteria
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups across the whole life course with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity.
  • Proficiency in administering, scoring, and interpreting clinical psychometrics.
  • Proficiency in using two or more distinct psychological therapies
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience of teaching, training, and supervising.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within Critical Care, Inpatients or Clinical Health settings
  • Experience of selection and recruitment.
  • Experience of contributing to a psychological perspective within the context of multidisciplinary care.
  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
Other Essential criteria
  • Ability to travel or access suitable transport in order to work from different bases within the working week if required.
Desirable criteria
  • Valid UK driving licence and access to own car.
