Job summary

An opportunity has opened up within our Paediatric Community SLT team for a Communication Team Lead. The successful candidate will have a strong background in Paediatric Community SLT, particularly Early Years, with experience in service development, having worked in a variety of teams and service delivery models. This is an operational role that focuses on people management and service development. Experience managing change, completing audits, using Excel and clinical reporting systems, and project management to completion, will be advantageous. A comprehensive leadership programme is available at UHB for new and experienced leaders wishing to further develop their management skills. We are also a research active trust, with opportunities to pursue Masters and PhD level qualifications directly related to the service.

Main duties of the job

To lead and manage speech and language therapists and assistants working within the community team, providing a core service across the Borough on a day to day basis, taking into account new developments and strategies within Children's services and the wider community setting.

To ensure the level of service is appropriate and Clinical Standards are met taking into account national guidance, evidence based practice and new developments and strategies within the community setting.

To participate in annual appraisal and review of staff within the team.

To support members of the team in their training and development needs.

To act as deputy to the Clinical Team Leader or Professional Lead for Children's Community Speech and Language Therapy in their absence, when requested.

To attend monthly Team Leaders meetings and other departmental and Therapy meetings as appropriate.

To communicate effectively to team members and to facilitate regular meetings and good communication across the team.

To support and advise Therapists in designated area of service.

To support new graduates in achieving full competency using the framework provided by RCSLT.

To take an active role in ensuring Trust policies are followed.

To take an active role in regional groups.

To develop and maintain effective multi-professional and multi-agency working.

To carry out any other duties of a similar nature consistent with the responsibilities of the post at the request of the Clinical Leader.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

* Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree * HCPC registration * Membership of RCSLT * GCSEs (including A-C grades in English and Maths or equivalent) * 3 passes at A level (or equivalent)

Desirable

Specialist level clinical experience working with an Early Years caseload. Experience of service change and development. Experience working with the Balanced System model of service delivery.

Experience

Essential

* 3-5 years experience in paediatrics * Evidence of a wide range of CPD activities relating to paediatric SLT and service development * Able to identify development needs of self and support others to do the same * Demonstrates in-depth knowledge about children's communication difficulties * Sound understanding of SEND Code of Practice

Desirable

* Able to contribute to the development of local clinical guidelines * Some knowledge and experience of working with children with a wide range of complex communication disorders, providing support in a variety of settings

* Able to make appropriate decisions based of a range of information * Able to manage own time and prioritise tasks * Able to prioritise team tasks * Able to contribute to service and team plans * Able to apply local, national and professional standards * Able to develop appropriate packages of care * Potential to develop skills in supporting members of staff with a lower level of responsibility, including mentoring * Directs and monitors team and reports issues to line manager * Able to use highly developed perceptual and observational skills to assess, plan and formulate treatment plans with internal and external partners. * Excellent interpersonal skills * Able to share distressing information in a sensitive manner with staff as well as clients and families * Meet travel requirements of the post which involves driving your car to and from visits/meetings.

* Able to contribute to inter-agency team building * Able to identify resources necessary for delivering SLT services within the community paediatric setting * Able to develop Clinical Governance and Audit projects for own area of service * Developing negotiation, management of conflict and influencing skills.
