Job summary

We are looking for an OT with at least 4 years of clinical experience in mental health, to take up this exciting opportunity for a Lead OT post within in the boroughs of Sutton and Merton. The post holder will work closely with the Deputy Head of Therapies for the Community, and the other Community Leads, to provide professional leadership and governance to occupational therapy staff working across the boroughs.

This rewarding role sits within our Community Service Line, which includes all community based mental health teams, such as our Integrated Recovery Hubs and Early Intervention services. Our teams have expanded with new and exciting roles following a period of Transformation. This has created an environment in which Occupational Therapists (OTs) can at last, work as pure OTs, fully using their innovation and creativity to support clients with complex mental health needs to recover and step down from Mental Health Services.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should have some leadership experience, such as in supervising staff and feeding into service development projects. We are looking for an energetic and innovative OT who has a flexible approach and is highly motivated. You will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and manage change and support staff through this process.

We use the Model of Human Occupation to provide standardised assessments. We have a manualised evidenced based intervention called GLOW (Graduated Living Outside of the Ward), to provide an individualised intervention and have developed an 8-week group intervention, based on Recovery Through Activity, to promote recovery goals, with the focus of stepping down from services and reconnecting our clients with community resources. We are committed to ensuring that all our community OTs receive basic training in Sensory Profiling, so that we can support clients with additional sensory needs.

The post involves supporting OTs to work closely with our colleagues in the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), in particular, Recovery Support Workers, Employment Specialists, and our Involvement Team, with whom we have close professional relationships. The role also involves actively recruiting new OT staff for the teams, delivering training and co facilitating the OT forum and RSW forum.

Job responsibilities

To deputise for the Deputy Head of Therapies for the Community in the boroughs.

To participate in the MDT planning and developments for the Community Service Line, attending local governance meetings and supporting the Deputy and Head of Therapies and local Service Managers to deliver wider Service Line projects.

To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of OT services within the boroughs, leading on delegated projects the development of evidence-based OT interventions.

Leading on the OT group programme in Sutton and Merton

To provide professional leadership to Occupational Therapists within the Community Service Line, through supervision and appraisal.

To contribute to the development of the Trust-wide OT Service.

To work with senior management in the boroughs, to help develop and implement occupational interventions that promote recovery and discharge from mental health services.

To lead on structures within the boroughs, aimed at upholding the quality of OT service eg OT forums

To help support the delivery of OT students placement

To promote recovery and social inclusion

To lead on recruitment and help support retention of Community OT staff within the boroughs and contribute to the strategy of increasing recruitment and retention of OTs across the Trust.

Where possible to undertake/lead with strategic clinical work with Community clients.

To lead on training for both Disability Awareness and Disability Champions in the boroughs and ensure that accessible premises and information is meeting the needs of clients issues with disabilities and that issues of equality and diversity are being addressed.

To help support the professional development and supervision of Recovery Support Workers in the boroughs.
