Job summary

Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust - Lead for Forward Thinking Birmingham ('FTB') is seeking to appoint a Band 5 Research Assistant Psychologist on a 12 month fixed term contract for the BART II trial. The aim of BART II is to investigate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for those considered "at risk" for bipolar disorder, and to hopefully help shape NHS services for this population group.

The post-holder will support and enhance the clinical research activities for FTB (including clinical research assessments, conduct of research, collection of data, development of audit and/or research projects, training, and project work). FTB is the new age 0-25 mental health service for Birmingham. As such, the post-holder will gain applied research experience across a wide range of mental health services for children, young people and adults.

You will have a good first degree in Psychology, Nursing or allied profession (at least a 2:1) or equivalent and mental health experience. You will have some experience of working in a mental health setting as an assistant psychologist or research assistant and experience of conducting research is essential.

There will be a frequent requirement to travel extensively across the wide footprint of the Trust.

Main duties of the job

This post is based across the Trust, mostly at the FTB Hubs across Birmingham. The post will work closely with clinical, research and support staff, Academic staff in the main study team and Staff from UoB's Institute of Mental Health and BCTU.

The post holder will work closely with clinical, research and support staff across FTB and R&D, various commercial and non-commercial research partners and staff from WM Clinical Research Network (CRN).

This post is primarily responsible formanaging the implementation and delivery of the BART II study. The post holder will be responsible for helping meet the recruitment target of this study and willsupport neighbouring Trusts' recruitment and data collection where needed.

Comply with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in delivering the ethical, scientific and practical standards of conduct for evaluation and research and providing assurance that the rights, safety and wellbeing of research participants are protected.

Maintain adequate participants' records and ensure all relevant information is accurately documented

Act as one of the primary points of contact for research participants

Support FTB staff in the delivery of research projects and develop excellent professional working relationships with staff across FTB, R&D and research partners.

Qualifications

Essential

Good honours degree in psychology (at least 2:1) or equivalent

Desirable

Graduate membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS)

Knowledge & Nature of Experience

Essential

Have experience of working as an assistant psychologist or research assistant Experience of conducting research projects Experience of working with young people with mental health difficulties or other vulnerable client groups.

Desirable

Experience of the application of psychological principles in health or social settings, preferably through work with qualified Clinical Psychologists Have Research skills such as the ability to search for, locate, extract, organise, evaluate and use or present information that is relevant to a particular topic

Analytical & Judgement Skills

Essential

Able to communicate effectively with young people who are experiencing mental health difficulties Able to communicate effectively with relatives, carers and a range of other professionals (education, social care, health) both verbally and in writing Ability to organise data collection and analysis for research, audit and service evaluation projects

Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge

Essential

Skills in using spreadsheets, databases, word-processing, e-mail, and internet software. Knowledge of research ethics and governance procedures

Desirable

Experience of conducting semi-structured interviews, eg. the PANSS. Experience of performing routine blood drawing procedures to include venepuncture techniques using standard equipment. Knowledge of SPSS or other statistical software packages.
