We are looking for a keen and dynamic deputy ward manager who has a passion for providing high quality patient centred care on our Emergency floor. This position is for a 14 month secondment.

The Emergency Floor has strong nursing leadership in place that consists of a dedicated Band 8 Matron, 3 highly skilled Band 7 department managers as well as 2 dedicated clinical educators and a team on 12 junior Sisters .

As a deputy ward manager you will be working both days and nights and your role will include coordinating the admission from AE and other sources, working in the ambulatory care area and providing support as a frailty/discharge coordinator.

You will also be involved in the line management of a team of nurses and HCA so this will include sickness management , appraisals and other informal processes. 

The Emergency Floor at Worthing Hospital provides acute care for patients with Medical, Surgical and Frail Elderly needs in one area. The Emergency Floor has been recognised both nationally and internationally as a department leading the way in the delivery of modern innovative patient centred care. 

Please note that this role is a secondment opportunity. Before applying you must seek agreement and authorisation from your current line manager. Secondments can’t be agreed without your current manager’s approval. If you are unable to gain your managers approval you should refrain from applying unless you wish to take this role as a fixed term position.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Ward Manager will support the Ward manager with leading the ward team. In conjunction they will be responsible for promoting an environment conducive to individual and team development to ensure the delivery of high standards of patient care in line with clinical governance.

You will gain experience in caring for patients with many different conditions that are covered by surgical and medical presentations. We also have patients who have complex needs and may be receiving Opti flow, Non invasive ventilation or having cardiac monitoring.

We also plan to open a new SDEC area within the Emergency Floor soon which will add extra learning and opportunities 

The role will provide the successful applicant with an array of learning opportunities that occur either in house as well as formally at either the University of Surrey or the University of Brighton.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Ensure that patients/client needs are identified and programmes of care are implemented to meet individual patient and client needs. Ensure that these programmes of care incorporate the Essence of Care, in order to reflect best practice. Ensure that all patients have appropriate risk assessments and that individual requirements are fully met. Be responsible for the control and custody of all medication and drugs in accordance with Western Sussex Hospital NHS Trust policy and statutory regulations Support the ward sisters in ensuring all nursing staff are working to their required level of clinical competence In conjunction with the Ward sisters develop policies, protocols and procedures necessary to support practice. In conjunction with the Ward Sisters take an active role in the management of issues and concerns raised within the clinical area by patients or their carers/relatives to reduce escalation to more a formal concern. In conjunction with the Ward sisters take an active role in Risk Management in line with Trust’s policy, report risks appropriately and assist in ensuring controls in place. Teach and facilitate learning for basic and post-basic nursing students in liaison with the educational bodies Provide induction and support for new staff members Ensure newly qualified nurses are provided with a preceptorship period. Teach & facilitate learning for those Health care Assistants undertaking NVQ training To work as part of a team ensuring effective communication with all health care professionals within the clinical team and across all discipline.
