Job summary

We are looking for an innovative Consultant Haematologist with substantial Haemostasis expertise to Direct our UK NEQAS for Blood Coagulation programmes hosted by the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

For over 50 years members of the UK NEQAS Consortium have provided high quality EQA programmes for all areas of clinical laboratory testing. These programmes have supported healthcare providers in therapeutic decision making and ensuring patients receive appropriate care. The staff and services provided by UK NEQAS for Blood Coagulation form a cornerstone of the UK NEQAS Consortium and their work has highlighted best practice, supported production of guidelines and driven harmonisation on a global level for over five decades. Led by an internationally respected team, UK NEQAS for Blood Coagulation exemplifies the high standards and professionalism of UK NEQAS.

Main duties of the job

UK NEQAS BC has been accredited as a proficiency testing provider since 1998 (with CPA) and since 2015 has been accredited to ISO17043 through the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). Currently we provide 12 UKAS accredited EQA programmes covering over 40 different tests and assays of haemostasis. More than 1,000 centres from 38 different countries participate in our laboratory-based programmes. In addition there are over 4600 participants in the UK NEQAS BC Point-of-Care Testing/Near-Patient Testing (POCT/NPT) programmes. In the past 25 years, we have published over 60 articles on EQA in peer reviewed journals and presented in excess of 100 abstracts/posters at national and international meetings

The appointee will provide professional direction, leadership and vision in all aspects of the operation of UK NEQAS BC pursuant to the Service Level Agreement (SLA) between Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STH NHS FT) and the United Kingdom National External Quality Assessment for Blood Coagulation, working in accordance with the UK NEQAS Code of Practice and the Department of Health directive on the management of EQA schemes based in the UK.

This post is for 2 programme activities (PA) per week.

Job responsibilities

1. Provide clinical direction to the UK NEQAS Blood Coagulation Scheme . Promote and enhance the research, education and training and development activities of UK NEQAS BC in relation to the laboratory practice of haemostasis and Interact effectively with other national and international bodies in the field of haemostasis and thrombosis, participating in their scientific programmes as Organise the Annual Participants Actively participate in relevant scientific programmes5. Direct the current and future research and development programme for UK NEQAS BC.

The successful candidate must be registered with the GMC with a valid licence to practice. For further information please visit the GMC website and click on the Registration and Licensing link. You will also have completed Specialist Training (or equivalent) and be entered on the Specialist Register of the GMC, or have a CCT date within six months of the date of interview.

Qualifications

Essential

Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview. Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview. MD or PhD or equivalent FRCPath or equivalent If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview

Clinical experience

Essential

Evidence of experience and expertise in the diagnosis and management of disorders of haemostasis and thrombosis and ability to work as an independent practitioner Knowledge of routine and specialist laboratory haemostasis and thrombosis Ability to perform within multidisciplinary team Evidence of high standing in the field of Haemostasis and thrombosis

Experience of working with EQA programme(s)

Essential

Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate Publications in Peer reviewed journals.
