An exciting opportunity has arisen in HMP Birmingham Healthcare for a Band 5 Staff Nurse in Birmingham Recovery Team formerly the IDTS (Integrated Drug Treatment Service Team).

BRT aims to increase the volume and care and quality of treatment available to prisoners that are assessed as requiring treatment for drugs and alcohol misuse, with particular emphasis on early custody.

BRT is within BSMHFT, one of the largest Mental Health Foundation Trusts in the UK.

Main duties of the job

To provide high quality evidence-based nursing care, advice, and support for service users with substance misuse, mental and physical health needs. This will include providing health and substance misuse assessment, medication and care within a Multi-Disciplinary custodial setting. Completing nursing reviews and observations of patients experiencing withdrawals from drug and alcohol using relevant screening tools such as COWS/CIWA. Supporting with ACCT (Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork) process and algorithms for fitness to remain in the Care and Separation Unit. To ensure a high standard of nursing in the application of clinical nursing procedures and treatment including the custody storage and administration of all prescribed medication required for patients' health and wellbeing. Consulting with internal and external partner agencies to provide continuity of care of Prisoners within HMP Birmingham. Please note as this role is based within HMP Birmingham as part of the recruitment process and offer of employment, HMPPS security vetting and clearance is required :

Enhanced Level 1 : This is the security level associated with all Non Directly Employed workers whose role does not require them to undergo National Security Clearance.

As part of Enhanced Level 1 clearance HMPPS will confirm:

ID, address history, eligibility and confirmation of Right to Work in the UK

Criminal convictions history

Employment history and references if deemed required.

Professional registration / qualifications checks (where applicable)

If you have lived abroad for a period of more than six months during the last three years you will need to provide a certificate of good conduct or an overseas police check in English from the countries resided in or visited - for guidance and contacts about how to do this, see;

If you have changed your name ( marriage) and are presenting documents in both your old and new names then you will need to supply documentation linking the two names ( marriage certificate, deed poll).
