Water Resources Planner

East Hanningfield, United Kingdom Northumbrian Water Full time

About the role

Northumbrian Water provides water and wastewater services across the North East and operating as Essex & Suffolk Water, supplies customers in parts of Essex, Suffolk, and Norfolk with drinking water in the most challenging circumstances in the UK. With the lowest rainfall and highest evapotranspiration rates anywhere in the country, we pride ourselves on our ability to manage our precious water resources carefully, providing a reliable source of water to our customers while striving to maintain the highest environmental standards in our rivers.

As our Water Resources Planner Options Lead, you will focus on coordinating the development of new supply-side options. You will have a key role in our dynamic Water Resources Team, which is responsible for long term and operational raw water resource planning across both our Northumbrian Water and Essex & Suffolk Water operating regions.

Supporting the Supply Demand Strategy, Water Resources, Tactical Planning and Asset delivery teams, the core function of this role is to coordinate and support the development of new supply-side options, such as transfer pipelines, water reuse, raw water reservoirs, and desalination, to feed into regional and company water resources and business planning processes. You will coordinate the assessment of their feasibility and integration into our existing operations, through liaison with our internal Hydrologists and strategy teams, and or consultants. You will collate option benefit and cost estimates and undertake least cost optimisation modelling following the water resources planning Economics of Balancing Supply and Demand principals.

You will coordinate and support the handover of options selected as part of the water resources planning process to our internal Tactical Planning Team and our consultants, for development of detailed scopes and design.

You will work with internal and external stakeholders and other utility companies and organisations to identify feasible, credible solutions to forecasted supply deficits. As many of the supply-side options available are new technologies to the UK this will involve the exploration of new innovations through regional planning groups (such as Water Resources East and Water Resources North East) and cross-company working groups.

As Water Resources Planner Options Lead you will be responsible for managing our consultants ensuring they build realistic and appropriately costed project scopes and that the options continue to meet the needs of the WRMP and business plan throughout their development.

The Water Resources Planner Options Lead will document the supply-side options, their dependencies, and risks and work with our Tactical Planning team to present their recommendations to the business to make an informed whole investment decision.

About you

You will be self-motivated, proactive, and organised, being able to prioritise and manage a dynamic workload to meet deadlines. With an attention to detail and accuracy, you will ensure robust data audit trails are maintained.

You will be highly numerate, adept in the use of Microsoft EXCEL, and have the ability to provide clear, concise narrative to explain technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences. Therefore, you will need to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.

You will be a specialist or subject matter expert with an engineering, construction, or project management background. With a degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering, scientific or numerical subject, and proven understanding of drinking water supply and/or treatment processes.

You will require an understanding of cost estimating and ideally experience in using costing tools. You will have experience of liaising with and/or managing external consultants, and the ability to challenge constructively.

You will be able to work collaboratively and build strong team relationships; to think analytically, strategically, and creatively to develop strategies and solutions.

You will require a valid driving licence for travel between office bases and operational sites within and outside our operational areas to attend sites and meetings.

Here at Northumbrian Water/Essex & Suffolk Water, we embrace and value Diversity, Inclusion and Equity which means bringing your full self to work. We encourage and welcome all applications, as we believe and strive to be an equal opportunity employer committed in having a diverse community represented within all our teams, structures, and organisation. We have our colleague network groups, including Rainbow Support Network (LGBT+), REACH (Race, Ethnicity, and Cultural Heritage), WiSTEM (Women in STEM) and Thisability (disability and neurodiversity) networks too.
