Teaching Personnel ar working closely with a secondary school in Portsmouth who are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Lead Teaching Assistant to join their supportive team. In this crucial role, you will support the learning and development of students across the school, leading a team of teaching assistants and collaborating with teachers to deliver an inclusive and supportive educational environment.

 Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and coordinate a team of teaching assistants, allocating tasks and ensuring consistent, high-quality support across classrooms. Provide mentorship and training to the team, encouraging best practices in student engagement and classroom support.
  • Work closely with students requiring additional support, both individually and in small groups, to reinforce lessons, provide guidance, and address specific learning needs. Facilitate and model high-quality support that promotes engagement, resilience, and a positive attitude towards learning.
  • Assist in creating, implementing, and reviewing Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs) for students with additional needs. Work collaboratively with the SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) and teaching staff to monitor progress and make adjustments to meet students’ changing needs.
  • Provide behavioural support, guiding students on appropriate classroom conduct and promoting a positive learning atmosphere. Handle low-level behavioural issues and support the teacher in managing challenging behaviour when needed.
  • Communicate with parents and caregivers regarding students’ progress, providing insights into their development and well-being. Offer guidance to families on how to support their child’s learning at home and address any concerns they may have.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, support plans, and interventions. Support the school’s administrative tasks related to student support, including preparing reports and documentation for parent-teacher meetings and school reviews.
  • Actively participate in ongoing professional development and training sessions. Stay informed about the latest practices in teaching support and inclusive education, sharing insights and skills with the team to enhance the overall support provided to students.

 

The ideal candidate for the Lead Teaching Assistant role will have:

  • Experience in Education Support: Previous experience as a teaching assistant, ideally in a secondary school setting, with a demonstrated understanding of the needs of secondary students and experience working with a range of abilities.
  • Strong Leadership and Organizational Skills: Proven ability to manage, mentor, and lead a team effectively. Able to prioritize tasks, delegate responsibilities, and ensure all team members contribute to a cohesive and productive classroom environment.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Able to engage and communicate effectively with students, staff, and families. Clear and compassionate communication skills are essential for building trusting relationships and supporting student's needs.
  • Knowledge of SEN Support Strategies: A strong understanding of strategies for supporting students with special educational needs, including social, emotional, and behavioural needs. Familiarity with individualized learning plans and differentiated instruction methods is highly beneficial.
  • Commitment to Inclusive Education: A dedication to creating an inclusive environment where every student feels supported and able to achieve their full potential.
  • Relevant Qualifications: A recognized qualification in teaching support, childcare, or education (e.g., Level 3 or above in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools) is essential. Additional training in SEN support or behaviour management is highly desirable.
  • Proactive and Resilient Mindset: A proactive approach to identifying student needs and implementing effective strategies. Resilience and a positive attitude are crucial for handling challenging situations with patience and professionalism.
