Reporting into the Head of Marketing & Communications, the purpose of the Communications Planner role is to develop the overall project strategy, to write and manage briefs, including drafting key messaging and customer benefits. The Communications Planner will coordinate channels and ensure message alignment, specifically developed for each channel.

It's a new role, the focus will be to improve productivity, aligning communications, channel owners and provides clarity across our messaging matrix. You’ll work across many projects from demand management to leaks, smart meters and water saving initiatives.

You’ll plan and create customer communications strategies for Affinity Water to help reach and connect with our target audience.

Principal Accountabilities

This is a key role within our Marketing & Communications team and crucial in helping us to provide strategic rigour, develop message matrices, and craft briefs ensuring integration of the work between creative, channel, message and media. Key outputs include messaging frameworks, annual plans, comms tasks and tactical briefs.

The Communications Planner is responsible for understanding our opportunities to connect with our customers throughout several customer journeys and within the wider marketing funnel. The Communications Planner will use this knowledge to formulate a media/messaging strategy that is given to the channel owners and wider communications teams, to implement and to further inform creative partners, the internal brand and content team or channel owners about specific messaging opportunities throughout the funnel.

Ultimately, we need someone that gets how communications planning and media works. Somebody that’s digitally fluent but not too myopic. The right person will get how digital media fits into a broader communications framework and will be equally comfortable talking about and planning traditional media, too.

Typically, you’ll be responsible for:

Managing the creation and delivery of communications briefs, campaigns and messaging. Work with channels managers to tailor key messages to specific channels. Co-manage the annual planning and support the development of content calendars with other managers. Build and maintain solid partnerships with internal stakeholders to better develop, coordinate, direct, and facilitate strategic communications designed to meet our business goals. Be responsible for presenting, defending and selling overarching messaging and strategy to senior stakeholders. Understand customer journey maps highlighting where key messages should be developed. Collaborate closely to create the strategy for campaigns, designing the most engaging content and campaign ideas. To apply processes to communication to ensure there is constant development, progress and effective ways of working with channel owners as well as customer communications teams. Function as a liaison between channel owners, wider marketing & Communications team as well as on occasion to externally agency partners. Undertake special projects and tasks when asked to and provide updates of briefs in the pipeline. Support and promote wider marketing campaigns across all customer journeys. Act as a subject matter expert on our customer strategy across the different projects, campaigns and initiatives, providing guidance and support to internal teams as needed. You’ll also be required to be part of our fast-fire reactive crisis comms team on standby out of hours, working on a rota basis. With water being a 24/7 utility, we operate an emergency service which can result in water supply incidents particularly during hot weather spells and winter freeze and thaws. Experience and skills required  5 years working customer communications, with expertise in customer databases, copywriting and personalisation tools. Extensive hands-on experience of creating and delivering communications briefs and annual plans.  Possess strong working knowledge of the strategic strengths and weaknesses of all media channels Previous experience in crafting marketing strategies and developing customer message matrices, owning the customer communications narrative. Deep understanding of segmenting, targeting, and working with customer data. Excellent communication and writing skills to be able to convey ideas succinctly, Skilled copywriter, as well as solid prioritisation and time management skills. Possess an understanding of performance metrics at each stage of the funnel and how to apply them to maximise campaign planning opportunities.
