Clinical Scientist

Maidstone, United Kingdom Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust Full time

Job summary

As one of the largest radiotherapy departments in England, the Kent Oncology Centre provides specialist cancer services to those living in Kent, Medway and parts of East Sussex through its centres in Maidstone and Canterbury

We have an exciting opportunity for a part time, fixed term role for a Clinical Scientist in Radiotherapy Physics with expertise in radiotherapy service development.

The post holder will work alongside the Clinical Oncology Research Fellow in Breast Radiotherapy, with support from Clinical and Clinical Science colleagues, and as part of a multidisciplinary team, to develop the breast radiotherapy service at the Kent Oncology Centre.

This role is fixed term for 12 months, part time at WTE, 15 hours per week and anticipated to be a working pattern of two days per week but with some flexibility and to be confirmed on appointment.

The Kent Oncology Centre currently has nine Varian linear accelerators across the two sites, including six Varian TrueBeam and two Halcyon machines, dedicated CT-Simulators on each site, Varian HDR Gamma-Med Plus iX and Prostate Seed Brachytherapy facilities at Maidstone and access to MRI and PET-CT imaging. We have Varian Eclipse, Varian Brachy TPS and Variseed for treatment planning and ARIA networked across the two sites.

Main duties of the job

The fellowship service development project addresses the anticipated increase in breast radiotherapy nodal treatment across Kent. The post holder will work in a joint project with the clinical research fellow encompassing three workstreams:

1. Development of local VMAT radiotherapy techniques to reduce external referrals and optimise local treatment delivery (radiotherapy including IMC and simultaneous integrated boost).

2. Implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for auto-contouring to improve efficiency of the breast radiotherapy planning process, crucial to sustaining the expansion in service.

3. Workload capacity projections: the implementation of a SIB technique may create additional treatment unit capacity but will require careful workforce planning to meet the increased demands on resources.

This will involve multidisciplinary working with clinicians, physicists, dosimetrists and therapy radiographers to develop and implement the service. Teaching and training of the multidisciplinary team as part of the implementation will be a crucial aspect of the role.
