Position Overview

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the operational delivery of the Molecular Pathology service, which includes the assessment and interpretation of results from a range of specialized molecular assays, including FISH, under the guidance of the Lead Clinical Scientist.

Important Note

This position is NOT suitable for individuals lacking substantial Histology expertise and experience at Band 6 Level or its equivalent.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will contribute to the clinical operations of the Molecular Pathology service, focusing on the evaluation and reporting of results from various specialized molecular tests, including FISH, under the supervision of the Lead Clinical Scientist.

Additionally, the individual will assume the role of Quality Lead for the Molecular Pathology service, collaborating with the Histology Quality Lead and the Pathology Quality Team to ensure adherence to national quality standards established by UKAS.

The post holder will be instrumental in the continuous enhancement of the specialized diagnostic and predictive testing services within the department. They will exhibit effective prioritization of workflows and advanced problem-solving capabilities. Strong leadership, mentoring, and team management skills are essential for this role. A comprehensive and current understanding of Histological and Molecular techniques is crucial. Furthermore, the candidate must demonstrate and uphold ongoing professional development (CPD) as a model for other staff members.

The post holder will oversee and instruct other Biomedical Scientist (BMS) staff, Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs), and various levels of support personnel within the department. They will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with all departmental and Trust policies and procedures, and will be expected to draft and maintain departmental documentation pertinent to their area of expertise.

Qualifications

Essential

  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical or Clinical Scientist
  • Fellowship of IBMS, MSc in Biomedical Science, or an equivalent qualification

Desirable

  • IBMS certificates of extended or expert practice in Molecular Pathology
  • Completion of the IBMS Higher Specialist portfolio

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience at AfC band 6 in all key Histology laboratory functions
  • Specialized knowledge of Molecular Pathology and its integration within Cellular Pathology
  • Thorough understanding of ISO 15189 for laboratory accreditation
  • Quality management experience (document control, audits, CAPAs, etc.)
  • Advanced proficiency in QPulse (or similar systems)
  • Proven track record of effective staff leadership
  • Involvement in planning and executing laboratory audit activities
  • Advanced comprehension of Histology and Molecular Pathology laboratory techniques
  • Experience in problem-solving and root cause analysis

Desirable

  • Experience in Molecular Pathology, including FISH
